Director Colin Trevorrow reveals major Jurassic World plot details

With production well underway on the much anticipated Jurassic World, director Colin Trevorrow spoke today with /Film in an effort to set straight some rumors about the film that have popped on online. Read on for details regarding the June 12, 2015 release!

Please be aware, some spoilers follow:

"'Jurassic World' takes place in a fully functional park on Isla Nublar," Trevorrow confirms. "It sees more than 20,000 visitors every day. You arrive by ferry from Costa Rica. It has elements of a biological preserve, a safari, a zoo, and a theme park. There is a luxury resort with hotels, restaurants, nightlife and a golf course. And there are dinosaurs. Real ones. You can get closer to them than you ever imagined possible. It’s the realization of John Hammond’s dream, and I think you’ll want to go there."

Trevorrow goes on to reiterate that the story takes place 22 years after the events of Jurassic Park and explains that the script came about while trying to incorporate two important themes: economic greed and mankind's relationship with modern technology.

"[O]ur relationship with technology has become so woven into our daily lives," he explains. "We’ve become numb to the scientific miracles around us. We take so much for granted... What if, despite previous disasters, they built a new biological preserve where you could see dinosaurs walk the earth…and what if people were already kind of over it? We imagined a teenager texting his girlfriend with his back to a T-Rex behind protective glass. For us, that image captured the way much of the audience feels about the movies themselves. 'We’ve seen CG dinosaurs. What else you got?' Next year, you’ll see our answer."

Trevorrow goes on to correct a recent internet rumor that suggested that we'll see "good" dinosaurs in Jurassic World.

"There’s no such thing as good or bad dinosaurs," he says. "There are predators and prey. The T-Rex in Jurassic Park took human lives, and saved them. No one interpreted her as good or bad. This film is about our relationship with animals, how we react to the threat they pose to our dominance on earth as a species. We hunt them, we cage them in zoos, we admire them from afar and we try to assert control over them. Chris Pratt’s character is doing behavioral research on the raptors. They aren’t trained, they can’t do tricks. He’s just trying to figure out the limits of the relationship between these highly intelligent creatures and human beings."

He also confirms that the film will feature a brand new species.

"[T]here will be one new dinosaur created by the park’s geneticists," he says. "The gaps in her sequence were filled with DNA from other species, much like the genome in the first film was completed with frog DNA. This creation exists to fulfill a corporate mandate—they want something bigger, louder, with more teeth. And that’s what they get."

New Jurassic World photos arrive, still no dinosaurs

"Ah, now eventually you do plan to have dinosaurs on your, on your dinosaur tour, right? Hello?" - Dr. Ian Malcolm

We're onto our second round of photos from Jurassic World and there's still no dinosaurs to be seen. If we had to guess, we'd say you'll be getting your first look at next month's San Diego Comic-Con. Instead, we get photos (via The A.V. Club) of Chris Pratt (upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy), Bryce Dallas Howard, Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins.

Jurassic World teases a new dinosaur

Director Colin Trevorrow has taken to Twitter today to tease one of Jurassic World's new dinosaurs. He posted the below image, showing the shadow of something very big with very sharp teeth.

"Night." is Trevorrow's only comment.

The image hits on the heels of our own coverage of this year's Licensing Expo in Las Vegas where we found, in addition to a 3D T. Rex standee, the below image of Jurassic World tie-in products.

"It's feeding time!" reads one piece of movie art, accompanied by a silhouette of an aquatic beast. Could this be the owner of Trevorrow's new shadow?

Following yesterday's unfortunate announcement of the passing of Lord Richard Attenborough, Jurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow has taken to Twitter to celebrate the actor with the below image of a statue dedicated to Attenborough's John Hammond, presumably from the set of the new film.

"In memoriam," Trevorrow writes.

Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow teases a familiar sign

Even though production wrapped last month on the upcoming Jurassic World, that's not stopping director Colin Trevorrow from sharing some interesting teases from the set of the upcoming film.

The latest one comes simply with the caption "Autumn" and shows off what remains of the sign that Wayne Knight's Dennis Nedry ran over while attempting to flee after stealing the dinosaur embryos in the first film. We've known for sometime that the new film will focus on a fully-realized version of John Hammond's dream from the original Jurassic Park, and that it would return to the setting of Isla Nublar.

Jurassic World director and οfficial site reveal more details

Earlier this week, Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures debuted the first trailer for Jurassic World and though it gave us a good idea of what to expect from the film, it also raised some interesting questions, such as: Why make a brand new dinosaur? How many sharks does a Mosasaurus eat in a day? Has Chris Pratt trained the Velociraptors to be his buddies? Where is the iconic Tyrannosaurus Rex?

Speaking with Empire, director Colin Trevorrow elaborated on the film and the trailer and answered many of these questions and more! Read on for the details.

“This new creation is what gave me a reason to tell another Jurassic Park story. We have the most awe-inspiring creatures to ever walk the Earth right in front of us, but for some reason that’s not enough. We’re always hungry for the next thing, and those who profit from it are always looking to feed that hunger. The focus groups want something bigger than a T-Rex. And that’s what they get.”

Trevorrow went on to talk about the Mosasaurus, which he says came out of a pitch meeting with producers Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall who hadn’t considered an aquatic dinosaur.

“I thought it would be cool if we had this massive animal and the park used one of our most fearsome modern predators as food. There could be a whole other facility where they used shark DNA to mass-produce them to feed the bigger beast. It’s a bonkers idea, but I’m comfortable going to Crazytown, because I used to live there when I was a kid.”

The final shots of the trailer suggest that Chris Pratt’s character, Owen, has trained the Velociraptors of Jurassic World into helping him hunt whatever dinosaur was “cooked up in the lab,” but Trevorrow says it’s more complicated than that.

“Owen’s relationship with the raptors is complicated. They aren’t friends. These animals are nasty and dangerous and they’ll bite your head off if you make the wrong move. But there are men and women out there today who have forged tenuous connections with dangerous predators. That’s interesting territory to me.”

Finally, Trevorrow was asked if we’ll be seeing the iconic T-Rex in the film, to which he replied: “You bet your ass you will.” Hold on to your butts.

In addition to Trevorrow’s interview, the official site for Jurassic World has been updated since the trailer’s launch to include new details about the actual park, including wait times for the attractions, photos of the main street/gift shop/petting zoo, a guided video of Isla Nublar’s own Hilton, and more that will be unlocked as we get closer to the film’s release. Fans will also notice a number of major and obscure references to the original Jurassic Park hidden within the site, such as the restaurant Winston’s (named for effects maestro Stan Winston, who developed the animatronics for the series) of which the top item on the menu is the Chilean Sea Bass (the same meal the group ate before venturing onto the tour in the original film). Plus, there’s a meet-and-greet with the venerable Mr. DNA! Go exploring on the official site by clicking here.

Irrfan Khan talks Jurassic World, his character Simon Masrani

We know a little bit about Irrfan Khan’s character in the upcoming Jurassic World thanks to the official viral sites that Universal debuted for the film. Khan’s Simon Masrani is the owner of Masrani Global, which purchased the infamous InGen shortly after the events of The Lost World: Jurassic Park, but what about him specifically as a character? Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Khan was asked about his character and described him as follows:

“I’m playing the park owner, a very flamboyant person….He’s trying to entertain the world with good intentions, but sometimes being flamboyant doesn’t mean having much wisdom.”

Sounds a lot like our old friend John Hammond. Khan went on to talk about what people can expect to be different about the sequel from the original.

“For sure it will have more vibe. It’s the Jurassic World of these times, with all the technical experimentation. It has now become a fully-bloomed dinosaur amusement park. Dinosaurs in this film will definitely be scary, but this is not a horror film, so it will be like a scary adventure.”

Colin Trevorrow teases Jurassic World’s new dinosaur

When the trailer debuted for Jurassic World three weeks ago, it confirmed a long-standing rumor that in the context of the film, the owners of the park had done a very silly thing – they’d made their own dinosaur. Speaking with EW, director Colin Trevorrow teased this brand new creation.

“There are dinosaurs and there’s the other—there’s this thing that is not one of them, that is not of them,” Trevorrow said. “There’s a lot of bold new ideas in the movie and I’m pushing it as far forward as I can. I know Steven didn’t want me to make a carbon copy of the earlier films. So we’re going for it.”

Based on Trevorrow’s comments, and the new image from the film as seen in the trailer of Chris Pratt working with Velociraptors seen below, are the dinosaurs able to tell the difference between the “real” dinosaurs and the Frankenstein-asaur? It’s unclear at the time, but certainly a point that could prove useful when the beast eventually escapes in the film.

Meet Jurassic World’s Indominus Rex: Bigger, louder and with more teeth

Universal Pictures has updated the official site for Jurassic World to include some new information on the film’s brand-new dinosaur, Indominus Rex. The site notes that the new animal’s name means “Fierce or Untamable King” and that’s it’s “currently” 40 feet in length.

“We set out to make Indominus the most fearsome dinosaur ever to be displayed at Jurassic World,” reads the description. “The genetic engineers at our Hammond Creation Lab have more than delivered…At first glance, Indominus most closely resembles a T. Rex. But its distinctive head ornamentation and ultra-tough bony osteoderms can be traced from Theropods known as Abeliosaurs. Indominus’ horns have been placed above the eye orbit through genetic material hybridized from Carnotaurus, Majungasaurus, Rugops and Giganotosaurus. Fearsome indeed…..Indominus’ roar is estimated to reach 140-160db—the same as a 747 taking off and landing. And it can reach speeds of 30 MPH while confined to its enclosure. Come experience Indominus Rex for yourself beginning this summer. If you dare.”

You can check out the teaser images of the dinosaur, along with an image of his enclosure below!
