Writers assemble for thirteenth Star Trek feature

With the series' 50th anniversary hitting in 2016, work is already underway to bring a thirteenth (or third, depending on your interpretation of temporal mechanics) big screen Star Trek adventure to theaters. Although there's no guarantee yet that the project will hit for the golden anniversary celebration, the odds of that are looking a little better today as The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne will be joining the returning Roberto Orci. Orci's writing partner, Alex Kurtzman, the outlet says, will be sitting this one out.

Although the film does not yet have a director locked, recent reports have hinted that Attack the Block helmer Joe Cornish is high on the list of potential candidates.

Although McKay and Payne do not, as of yet, have a produced credit to their name, they have already worked with J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot Productions on Boilerplate: History's Mechanical Marvel, a planned adaptation of the book by Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett.

Roberto Orci confirmed to direct 13th Star Trek feature

It appears to be official. Following a recent report that he was after the job, Variety is reporting that Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness screenwriter/producer Roberto Orci will direct the 13th franchise feature. Orci is joined on the project by screenwriters Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, who will help him pen the next adventure of the Enterprise crew.

There's no announced timeframe for the next Star Trek film as of yet, but the franchise will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016. If the plan is to have a film in theaters to tie into the occasion, expect official announcements on the film in the very near future.

Roberto Orci sets Star Trek 3's course heading

The next Star Trek film (either the third or thirteenth, depending on your point of view) has set a course for the final frontier. Director Roberto Orci, in speaking to Geoff Boucher on the Humans From Earth podcast (via Badass Digest) revealed today that, unlike J.J. Abrams' Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, the new film will take place in deep space.

"In this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen," says Orci. "They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space."

Orci is joined on the project by screenwriters Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, who are helping him pen the next adventure of the Enterprise crew.

The expectation is that the new film will land in theaters in 2016, just in time for the franchise's 50th anniversary. At the moment, however, no release date has been set.

First draft of Star Trek 3 screenplay completed

TrekMovie.com has received word from Star Trek 3 co-writer Roberto Orci that the first draft of the screenplay for the upcoming film has been completed. Orci confirmed that he and co-writers Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne finished the draft last week, and that he's hoping to begin production on the film in the spring of 2015.

Orci has also been tapped to direct the third (or thirteenth, depending on your point of view) adventure of the Enterprise crew, following the departure of J.J. Abrams for a galaxy far, far away.

There's no announced timeframe for the next "Star Trek" film as of yet, but the expectation is that the new film will land in theaters in 2016, just in time for the franchise's 50th anniversary.

Star Trek 3 could see the return of William Shatner

It was a pretty big deal when former "Star Trek" cast member Leonard Nimoy joined the cast of J.J. Abrams' reboot film in 2009, and though he only appeared on screen very briefly, it still became an important cameo that long-time fans enjoyed (he also appeared briefly in Abrams' second film).

Now, Badass Digest brings word that something similar is brewing for the upcoming Star Trek 3 which they report features a scene reuniting both William Shatner's Kirk and Nimoy's Spock together onscreen. As the site mentions, we are still quite a ways away from production beginning on the film, and even then it is subject to Shatner deciding to appear in the film.

William Shatner confirms he has been contacted about Star Trek 3

Last week, an interesting rumor popped up that the original Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner, could have a role in the upcoming Star Trek 3, and that he would be reuniting with Leonard Nimoy's Spock for the first time on screen in decades. Though Shatner was quick to dismiss the rumor on Twitter, the actor confirmed at an appearance at Wizard World Nashville this weekend that he had in fact been contacted about appearing in the film.

ComicBook.com reports that actor mentioned that producer J.J. Abrams called him directly about potentially returning, saying: "I'm calling because the director of Star Trek, the next movie, has had an idea where you might be involved, so I'm calling to find out whether you would be interested."

Shatner says he told Abrams, "It depends on what you do with the character, but I would be delighted." He went on to detail that he was sworn to secrecy on the matter but that after he was contacted the story managed to make its way online.

"So the news is out that they have an idea that they want Leonard and myself…they might want Leonard and myself in it," the actor said. "But I would love to do it. But how do you get me fifty years later into the movie? I mean how do you rationalize it. I know it's science fiction, but even I couldn't come up with an idea. So that's the news on that."

Breaking: Bob Orci Removed from Star Trek 3!

Although he was confirmed for the director’s chair this past summer, Bob Orci will no longer direct the upcoming, still unofficially titled, Star Trek 3 (or 13, depending on your personal understanding of temporal dynamics). What’s more, Deadline brings word that, among the potential replacements on Paramount Pictures’ short list, is none other than Shaun of the Dead and The World’s End helmer Edgar Wright!

There’s no word yet on the reason for Orci’s departure and it is still believed that the film will move forward with the same screenplay, scripted by Orci, Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne. Although a release date has not been specified, it is widely believed that the plan is for the film to hit theaters in 2016, as the year marks the 50th anniversary of the “Star Trek” franchise.

Justin Lin to direct Star Trek 3!

Paramount has, according to Deadline, set four-time The Fast and the Furious franchise helmer Justin Lin to direct the upcoming Star Trek 3 (or 13 depending on your point of view). The news arrives nearly three weeks after word first broke that Roberto Orci would not be taking the director’s chair.

Lin’s credits also include his indie debut Better Luck Tomorrow (which he retconned into a The Fast and the Furious prequel of sorts), the Naval drama Annapolis and several key episodes of Dan Harmon’s “Community.” He’ll also be directing the first two episodes of “True Detective” Season Two.

Simon Pegg is co-writing Star Trek 3

Simon Pegg, who played Scotty in the last two “Star Trek” films, is taking on a second task for the third installment – screenwriter. According to Deadline, Pegg has been set to co-write Star Trek 3, which will be directed by “Fast & Furious” helmer Justin Lin. This is following the news from December that Roberto Orci would no longer be writing the Paramount/Skydance film. Pegg is co-writing the script with Doug Jung (“Dark Blue,” “Banshee”), says The Hollywood Reporter‘s Borys Kit.

Pegg will also reprise his role as Scotty, of course, reteaming with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, and Zoe Saldana as the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. J.J. Abrams, who directed the last two films, is producing this time around.

Pegg has previously written the Edgar Wright-directed Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End, as well as the comedies Run, Fatboy, Run and Paul.

Star Trek 3 adds Kingsman’s Sofia Boutella

The cast of the next, still-untitled Star Trek film is coming together. Following word late last month that Idris Elba is in talks to play the film’s villain, comes word, via Deadline, that Algerian actress Sofia Boutella, best known for her recent appearance as the blades-for-legs femme fatale assassin Gazalle in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service, has signed on for a mystery role!

Filming begins on Star Trek 3 at the squamish boulders in British Columbia

According to Sci-fi Pulse, the blockbuster sequel Star Trek 3 (possibly titled “Star Trek Beyond”) has boldy begun principal photography today at the Squamish Boulders site in British Columbia, roughly an hour outside of Vancouver. Production will continue at the Great Wall Boulders on June 26, 29 and 30, and you can check out a YouTube video of the site and its abnormally large boulders below. Why would a Star Trek movie film near such large rock formations? As Captain Kirk would say, “Because it’s there.”

To mark the occasion, onscreen couple Zachary Quinto (a.k.a. Spock) and Zoe Saldana (a.k.a. Uhura) have posted a few (not-that-revealing) pics on Instagram:

The Raid’s Joe Taslim Signs on for Star Trek Beyond

Star Trek Beyond set video reveals Sofia Boutella

Paramount Pictures’ Star Trek Beyond is now in production in Vancouver and Screen Crush today managed to get an excellent look at some of the outdoor filming. In the player below, you can check out video from the Star Trek Beyond set that features stars Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and, in heavy alien makeup, Kingsman: The Secret Service star Sofia Boutella.

Sofia Boutella’s character doesn’t seem to belong to an existing Star Trek race, although the white skin and black facial markings certainly bring to mind the Nibiran people from Star Trek Into Darkness. A primitive, pre-warp civilization, the Nibirians became the collective victims of a massive Prime Directive violation on the part of Pine’s Captain James T. Kirk at the beginning of the J.J. Abrams film.

Also featured in the Star Trek Beyond set footage is a new Starfleet jacket worn by Pine and Yelchin. Seemingly the source of the Delta logo patch director Justin Lin tweeted back in June (as seen above), the design is reminiscent of both the “Star Trek: Enterprise” crew uniforms and Captain Jean-Luc Picard’s “Star Trek: The Next Generation” fifth season duty jacket.

Star Trek Beyond delivers aliens for first contact day

“Don’t try to be a great man,” go the immortal words of warp drive creator Zefram Cochrane, “Just be a man. And let history make its own judgements.”

Today marks the pre-anniversary of Cochrane’s April 5, 2063 flight aboard his experimental ship, the Phoenix. 47 years from now, Cochrane launches the vessel from Bozeman, Montana and successfully tests its warp drive capabilities. The epochal event will attract the attention of the Vulcan race, who will decide that mankind is ready for their first contact with an extraterrestrial species.

It is in honor of Cochrane and his (admittedly fictional[) First Contact flight that Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin today delivers a fun surprise for Trek fans. The above image (which you can check out in full below) shows off two of the new film’s alien species.

“Here I am hanging with two of my favorite people to ever work with,” Lin writes, “…I know this will probably be a tough one since the casting of these two actors hasn’t been announced yet and you won’t find them listed on IMDb. So here’s a hint – I’ve worked with them both before STB. Good luck.”
