J.K. Simmons joins Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island

On Friday, we learned that Legendary Pictures had shifted the release date for their upcoming film Kong: Skull Island from November of 2016 to spring 2017, and now Deadline brings word that actor J.K. Simmons has signed on to appear in the film. A fan-favorite to genre fans for his role as J. Jonah Jameson in the “Spider-Man” films, Simmons can currently be seen in the film Whiplash and will appear in Terminator Genisys next summer.

Simmons joins a cast that thus far only includes another comic book movies veteran, Tom Hiddleston. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) and written by John Gatins (Flight) and Max Borenstein (Godzilla), Kong: Skull Island will fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. Legendary’s story honors the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but places it in an entirely new, distinct timeline.

Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce and Alex Garcia will executive produce. The film will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D by Universal Pictures on March 10, 2017.

J.K. Simmons reveals a surprise setting for Kong: Skull Island

Following his nomination this morning for Best Supporting Actor in Whiplash, J.K. Simmons spoke briefly with MTV, revealing a major surprise concerning his role in the upcoming Kong: Skull Island. He says that the film will take place in Detroit in 1971! (That is, of course, in addition to its setting on a fictional island off the coast of Sumatra). What’s more, the production is planning to take place in Detroit.

“When it first came to my attention, ‘There’s interest in you for a new ‘King Kong,’ I thought, ‘Okay… Why?’” Simmons explains, “But then I met with Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who’s going to be directing it and John Gatins, who’s writing and Tom [Hiddleston]. Jordan was just so passionate and so smart. It’s such an intersting, new take on it. It’s set in Detroit in 1971, which is where I grew up. We’re going to shoot it in Detroit during baseball season, so I’ll be able to go to Tigers games! There’s a lot to like about this movie!”

In addition to Simmons and Hiddleston, it was recently revealed that Michael Keaton (who himself was nominated today for his leading role in Birdman) is being sought for a role. His casting doesn’t appear to be 100% confirmed quite yet as it remains to be seen how the Kong: Skull Island shooting schedule will stack up against yesterday’s news that Keaton will headline John Lee Hancock’s McDonald’s “origin story,” The Founder.

J.K. Simmons and Michael Keaton exit Kong: Skull Island

Deadline brings word that actors J.K. Simmons and Michael Keaton have both dropped out of Legendary Pictures and Universal’s Kong: Skull Island due to scheduling conflicts. Production on the film was set to begin this fall but was recently delayed a few weeks, resulting in the conflict. Legendary is currently seeking to replace the two actors in the film, which still has the god of mischief himself, Tom Hiddleston, attached to star.

Kong: Skull Island adds Fantastic Four’s Toby Kebbell

As Legendary Pictures and Universal Studios fill out the cast for Kong: Skull Island, The Hollywood Reporter has brought word that Fantastic Four‘s Dr. Doom, actor Toby Kebbell, will be joining fellow Marvel stars Tom Hiddleston (Thor), Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers) and John C. Reilly (Guardians of the Galaxy) in the blockbuster. Tom Wilkinson (Batman Begins), Brie Larson (Trainwreck) and Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton) are also set to co-star.

Although Kebbell has come off fairly unscathed after the debacle that was Fantastic Four, he still has the epics Ben-Hur (playing Messala), Warcraft (playing Durotan) and A Monster Calls opposite Liam Neeson and Felicity Jones in the can to help audiences forget FF ever happened.

King Kong vs. Godzilla planned as Skull Island heads to WB!

Something big is brewing today as Deadline reports that Legendary’s upcoming Kong: Skull Island has moved from Universal to Warner Bros. According to the outlet, that’s because Legendary is keen on developing a new King Kong vs. Godzilla movie and are making efforts to keep the gargantuan beasts under the same distributor. Skull Island remains on track for a March 10, 2017 with a sequel to Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla planned for June 8, 2018. After that, the Eighth Wonder of the World will take on the King of Monsters in an as-of-yet untitled King Kong vs. Godzilla feature!

Of course, this won’t be the first time that these titans have clashed. 1962’s King Kong vs. Godzilla marked the third Godzilla feature. In that film, the size of both monsters was adjusted to even the odds, however Godzilla is traditionally significantly larger than Kong. May we suggest pulling in Legendary’s other Kaiju-friendly franchise, Pacific Rim, and giving Kong his own mecha-ape Jaeger?

How big will Kong be in Skull Island? BIG

Entertainment Weekly is giving us our first hint at just how big Kong will be in Legendary and Warner Bros. Pictures‘ upcoming Kong: Skull Island with a new pic featuring Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman and one big-ass monkey skull. You can check out the image below!

“From the size of the skull, you can tell that things on this island are much bigger than audiences are used to with traditional Kong lore,” says director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. “Our Kong is by far the biggest Kong that you’ve seen on screen, and that translates to a lot of different things on the island. Peter Jackson’s Kong was around 25 feet. The ‘33 Kong ranged between 25 feet and 50 feet, I want to say he was 50-plus feet when he was on the Empire State Building. He varied in size dramatically! The ’70s Kong was somewhere between them. The thing that most interested me was, how big do you need to make [Kong], so that when someone lands on this island and doesn’t believe in the idea of myth, the idea of wonder – when we live in a world of social and civil unrest, and everything is crumbling around us, and technology and facts are taking over – how big does this creature need to be, so that when you stand on the ground and you look up at it, the only thing that can go through your mind is: ‘That’s a god.’”

Shine a light on a new Kong: Skull Island monster

We just received an interesting delivery tied to Legendary and Warner Bros. Pictures‘ upcoming 2017 monster blockbuster and it reveals a new Kong: Skull Island monster… if you know where to look! Accompanied by a letter from MONARCH (that’s the scientific organization that debuted in Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla), a poster-sized map shows off the layout of Skull Island itself. If you get the map under a black light, however, it offers quite a few top secret notes and a look at an underwater creature! Check out the full version of both maps in the gallery viewer at the bottom of this page. If you’d like to get a really close look at the top secret MONARCH notations, just click the image at the top of this page. You can also check out DiscoverSkullIsland.com for more info!

The letter itself is signed by William Randa, who is played John Goodman in the new film. Will his character help pave the path between both contenders for 2020’s Godzilla vs King Kong? Only time will tell!

Fiery concept art from Kong: Skull Island

Empire has revealed this fiery concept art from Kong: Skull Island! Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts tells the magazine the movie is set at the height of the Vietnam War, when napalm was the weapon of choice.

“The script I first read took place in 1917,” he said. “But when I started talking to the Legendary guys, I was thinking, ‘What weird King Kong movie would I want to see?’ So I pitched them the Vietnam War connection, literally thinking they were gonna laugh me out of the room. And to Legendary’s credit, they said, ‘Cool. Let’s figure it out.’ The aesthetics of that time mixed with King Kong makes for an incredible genre mash-up.”
