Michael Fassbender takes an Assassin's Creed

Variety reports that the planned movie adaptation of Ubisoft's popular video game Assassin's Creed is moving forward with Michael Fassbender attached to star in and co-produce the movie.

Originally, the Assassin's Creed movie was going to be produced in conjunction with Sony Pictures but those negotiations were put on hold and Ubisoft has decided to finance and produce the film independently through their recently-launched Ubisoft Motion Pictures (UMP) division with former EuropaCorp CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet running the show.

The original game involves a bartender named Desmond Miles, captured by a secret organization with ties to the Knight Templar who repeatedly send Miles back in time into the body of his assassin ancestors to retrieve valuable historical artifacts, the first time going back to the Crusades. Presumably, Fassbender would be playing Miles, even though that's not stated in the story.

Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet, said about the actor:

"Michael Fassbender was our first choice. Michael (Fassbender) is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor."

The various "Assassin's Creed" games have sold over 30 million units since the first game's debut in 2007 with "Assassin's Creed III" scheduled for October 30. Ubisoft has big plans to turn the games into a movie franchise, but they first have to find a writer and director, which they'll probably do before going out to studios, including Sony.

"We're open to re-discuss with the key studios once the production package is finalized," Baronnet told Variety. "Whatever the financial model, UMP will limit its risk investment." According to the story, they also will save on production costs by using some of the in-house game studios to handle visual effects for the movies.

The Variety story also mentions that the company wants to adapt "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell" and "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon" into films and are developing an animated television series based on the "Raving Rabbids" for Nickelodeon.

Assassin's Creed gets new screenwriting talent with Exodus: Gods and Kings pair

The upcoming big screen adaptation of the hit video game franchise Assassin's Creed has scored two new writers. Deadline reports that Bill Collage and Adam Cooper, best known for their work on Ridley Scott's upcoming biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings, will rewrite Michael Lesslie's adapted screenplay. Michael Fassbender remains attached to headline and produce.

The original game involves Desmond Miles, captured by a secret organization with ties to the Knight Templar who repeatedly send Miles back in time into the body of his assassin ancestors to retrieve valuable historical artifacts, the first time going back to the Crusades.

No director is, as of yet, attached to Assassin's Creed, although recent rumors have named Safe House helmer Daniel Espinosa a likely candidate. With a release date set for August 7, 2015, expect an official confirmation in the very near future.

Michael Fassbender talks Assassin's Creed movie, Discusses being faithful to game

It's been some time since we had an update on the upcoming Assassin's Creed feature adaptation, which is set to open in one year's time on August 7, 2015, but IGN recently sat down with star Michael Fassbender who confirmed that he's still attached to the project and they're still working on the script. The outlet also asked Fassbender how faithful he thinks they'll be to the original game, to which he replied:

"You know, we absolutely want to respect the game. There's so much cool stuff in the game that we're actually spoiled for choice in terms of what we can use and what we can't, but we also want to bring new elements to it and perhaps our own version of things that already exist in the game. But we're definitely making a feature film, and we're approaching it as a feature film, as opposed to approaching it as a video game. But I love the world. I don't really play that many video games, but when I met up with the guys from Ubisoft and they started to explain this whole world and the idea of DNA memory - you know, I think it's a very feasible scientific theory. I just thought, 'This is so rich,' and about the possibility of it being this cinematic experience. So I'm really excited about it, and we're working very hard to make sure that we've got the best and most exciting, original package."

Fassbender also opened up about director Justin Kurzel, who joined the project back in April, saying:

"I just think that there's one thing Justin should be doing, and that's directing. I know that from working with him on Macbeth. He's just fantastic in terms of his vision. Adam, the DP that he works with, is amazing. They've got a great shorthand - that's essential. He's fantastic with actors and each department. He's a real heavyweight."

Bill Collage and Adam Cooper, who recently penned Ridley Scott's upcoming biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings, wrote the most recent draft of the script. Fassbender is also set to co-produce the film with Frank Marshall.

Marion Cotillard joining Assassin’s Creed in unspecified role

Those who have been chomping at the bit for a movie based on Ubisoft’s hugely popular Assassin’s Creed video game franchise can start getting excited, because the movie is coming together with another name announced to join Michael Fassbender in the long-awaited adaptation.

Deadline is reporting that Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard has signed on to join the film in an undisclosed role, which will not only reunite her with Fassbender from their upcoming adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, but also with that film’s director, Australia’s Justin Kurzel.

Like Fassbender, her role will span multiple movies within the franchise if the first movie does well, and it continues her run of big-budget action movies following her role as Talia in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.

The article also mentions that Regency and Ubisoft are trying to get a Splinter Cell movie going with Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) directing and starring Tom Hardy.

Cotillard will be at the Oscars a week from Sunday, having been nominated for her role in Two Days, One Night.

Ubisoft motion pictures CEO compares Assassin’s Creed movie to Batman Begins

Video game adaptations don’t have the best track record in Hollywood, and for good reason, which is why when Ubisoft decided to begin adapting their properties, they wanted to maintain some control and develop the projects in house. The first of these films that will see the light of day is none other than the Assassin’s Creed movie, which is currently in production. Speaking with Premiere Magazine (via /Film), the CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures, Jean-Julien Baronnet, spoke about the development process of the film and revealed their cinematic inspiration.

“[Michael Fassbender] accepted very quickly. And it was the only actor which we thought was obvious. So we started with the actor, which is incongruous. Even more incongruous, he engaged us with nothing. There was no script, no studio or anything. We told him we were going to build the project together, we have a huge brand and we want to make a make a film with references to feature films like Batman Begins and Blade Runner. That is why we tend to. He was promised that he could work with the writers, we would associate it with all key creative choices.”

“Our approach is to remain in control of the development, so to finance it 100%. We choose writers who are not necessarily stars but people who have understood the universe. And as long as the script is not level, it will not launch. It has also worked very closely with New Regency for Assassin’s Creed. We needed them for their expertise. There was a kind of triptych between the actor, the studio and us. It is the combination of the three who built this scenario. With arbitration returning us as we fund. The beauty of being a small structure is that no contingencies that lead us to release films in greenlighter quickly. It leaves time to time to arrive at what it takes. Four years of development for Assassin!”

Michael Fassbender’s back in an Assassin’s Creed set photo

Production is currently underway on the much-anticipated video game adaptation and we’ve got a new photo of leading man Michael Fassbender on the Assassin’s Creed set. It arrives thanks to a Twitter post from Fassbender’s DMC Film banner. You can check out the original below for a larger look.

What, exactly, is happening in this Assassin’s Creed set photo is unclear. It offers what is most likely a glimpse at Fassbender’s character, Callum Lynch, during a scene set in present day. We’re not entirely sure what the marks on the back of his neck are or even whether or not they’re part of the film. They may even be a minor injury that the star suffered during production itself.

Michael Fassbender talks playing Assassin’s Creed to prepare for the film

Michael Fassbender has a distinct advantage for many of his film roles, which are rooted in either fictional super villains that are featured in countless comic books or real people whose lives have been documented in excess. Even his next role, starring in the feature adaptation of Assassin’s Creed, has nine video games along with books and comics offering a window into Ubisoft’s world; however, Fassbender revealed to EW that before he had been offered the part, he never played the game.

“I hadn’t played it before these guys approached me,” Fassbender says. “I’ve played it since mainly to get an idea of the physicality of the character. We’re striving to find something special. We believe the whole concept around it is special and want to service that the best we can. The fans are really passionate: very specific and they expect accuracy and historical detail. We’re really trying to capitalize and feed on and enjoy the fun element. We’re working hard to make this something special.”

You can check out a new photo from the film, featuring Fassbender and Ariane Labed in their Assassin garb, below.
