BREAKING: Josh Trank to direct stand-alone Star Wars film

In addition to the episodes of a new "Star Wars" trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney continue development of multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. The newest director to come on board is Josh Trank.

"We're thrilled to welcome Josh into the family," says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. "He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX."

Trank states, "The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time."

Trank previously directed Chronicle and is currently at work on The Fantastic Four for 20th Century Fox.

Last month, it was announced that Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards will direct the first "Star Wars" stand-alone movie hitting theaters on December 16, 2016.

Josh Trank exits Star Wars spinoff

Although it was revealed nearly a year ago that Chronicle director Josh Trank would be helming the second Star Wars Anthology film, word has just broken that Trank will not be visiting a galaxy far, far away. The film he was attached to, however, remains in development at Lucasfilm and a new helmer is expected to be announced soon.

“After a year of having the incredible honor of developing with the wonderful and talented people at Lucasfilm, I’m making a personal decision to move forward on a different path,” says an official statement from Trank. “I’ve put a tremendous amount of thought into this, and I know deep down in my heart that I want to pursue some original creative opportunities. That said, the Star Wars universe has always been one of my biggest influences, and I couldn’t be more excited to witness its future alongside my millions of fellow Star Wars fans. I want to thank my friends Kathleen Kennedy, Kiri Hart, Simon Kinberg, and everyone at Lucasfilm and Disney for the amazing opportunity to have been a part of this. May the Force be with you all.”

“It was a privilege to collaborate with Josh,” says Lucasfilm VP of Development Kiri Hart. “We are grateful for the energy and love of ‘Star Wars’ that he brought to the process, and we wish him all the best.”

Many fans anticipated a disturbance in the Force last month during the Star Wars Celebration when Trank did not take the stage alongside Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One helmer Gareth Edwards as was originally planned. Trank’s next film is 20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Four, hitting theaters on August 7.

The second Star Wars Anthology film is reportedly a Boba Fett movie!

Just days after word broke confirming that Chronicle and Fantastic Four helmer Josh Trank will not be directing the upcoming second Star Wars Anthology film comes word, via TheWrap, that the project will be a Boba Fett movie, centering on the fan-favorite intergalactic bounty hunter. Although the outlet uses the term “origin story,” we already saw the origins of young Boba Fett and how he lost his “father,” Jango Fett, in 2002’s Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones. Assuming this new report is accurate, it’s likely that the new film will update us on early Boba Fett adventures taking place somewhere between Attack of the Clones and The Empire Strikes Back.

Boba Fett’s first appearance was in an animated segment of the non-canonical “Star Wars Holiday Special.” Beyond his role in four of the six current “Saga” films (including a Special Edition appearance in the original Star Wars), Fett’s story has been expanded on in several episodes of the canonical animated series, “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.”

The new Anthology film is expected to hit theaters in 2018, following J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens this December 18, Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One on December 16, 2016, and Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII on May 26, 2017.

As always, check back for confirmation and updates as soon as they become available.

Han Solo movie on the way from The LEGO Movie helmers

Lucasfilm has officially announced that The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have been tapped to direct a “Star Wars Anthology” film that will serve as a young Han Solo movie!

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”

The screenplay for the Han Solo movie is written by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan and focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.

Lawrence Kasdan, the writer and director known for Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Big Chill, and Grand Canyon, is familiar to “Star Wars” fans for having co-written the screenplays for The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. His son Jon Kasdan wrote and directed The First Time, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and In the Land of Women, as well as writing for the television series “Freaks and Geeks” and “Dawson’s Creek.”

“We’re so excited to be working with Chris and Phil, who will bring a fresh new dimension to the Star Wars universe,” said the Kasdans. “They’re two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.”

Kathleen Kennedy, who will be producing the Han Solo movie, says she can’t wait to discover what’s in store from these two extraordinary teams of directors and writers.

“It’s not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I’m excited to say we’ve found the perfect team to handle the task. Larry and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han’s story.”

Slated for a May 25, 2018 release, the Han Solo movie will be executive produced by Lawrence Kasdan and Jason McGatlin and co-produced by Will Allegra.

New details emerge on the Star Wars Anthology Han Solo film!

Officially announced by Lucasfilm last month, The LEGO Movie helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller are gearing up to direct a still-untitled Star Wars Anthology film that will follow Han Solo. Today, EW has some interesting details regarding the film’s potential tone and who the filmmakers are looking at as far as the Han Solo casting.

“We don’t want to spend time going back and answering a lot of questions that, quite frankly, I don’t think people want answered,” says Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. “…I think the key here is that we are identifying an event or events in Han Solo’s life that gives you some idea of who he is and why he is the character we have all known to love…You can imagine, given who we’ve chosen to come in and direct, it should be very entertaining and funny. Han Solo is the character inside Star Wars that everybody knows has a wit and sense of humor. So that’s what this should be.”

The screenplay for the Han Solo movie is written by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan and will focus on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.

Technically, the new film marks the second Han Solo casting from Lord and Miller. Voice actor Keith Ferguson played the part in their The LEGO Movie. Now, though, the search is on for a new star to take over the role made famous by Harrison Ford. According to Kennedy, the new Han Solo casting will aim for an actor about 15 years younger than Ford was during Star Wars.

“He’ll definitely be probably in the high teens, low 20s,” she says. “We’re not introducing you to a 10-year-old Han Solo.”

Chewbacca will also feature in the Han Solo movie!

Officially announced by Lucasfilm last year, The LEGO Movie helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller are gearing up to direct a still-untitled Star Wars Story film that will follow Han Solo. Today, however, there’s an interesting update: Everyone’s favorite Wookiee is also a part of the story. Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed Chewbacca’s involvement with the film during Deutsche Bank‘s 24th Annual Media, Internet and Telecom Conference, describing the 2018 release as “an origin story about Han Solo and Chewie.“

Han Solo movie teased by co-director Chris Miller

A few weeks ago, it was rumored that Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!, Blue Jasmine) had emerged as the frontrunner for the lead role in Phil Lord and Chris Miller‘s 2018 Han Solo Star Wars Story film. Since then we have had no confirmation of anything from the picture, but in honor of May the 4th (a.k.a. Star Wars Day), Miller has tweeted a shot of Han Solo’s iconic blaster on a set which may or may not be the Millennium Falcon. Whether this is a set photo from The Force Awakens or new sets being constructed for Miller’s Han Solo movie we’re not sure, but it’s a fun reminder that we still have more adventures ahead for our favorite scruffy lookin’ nerf herder.

Lucasfilm planning multiple Han Solo movies with Alden Ehrenreich

Surprising no one, The New York Daily News reports that Disney and Lucasfilm are already looking to the future with their new Han Solo, formally introduced to the public as Alden Ehrenreich at Star Wars Celebration.

The outlet reports that Ehrenreich has signed at least a three-picture deal for his role as everyone’s favorite smuggler as they hope for box office success with the first film. They quote an insider as saying:

“There is a real sense of excitement around the Han Solo movie and its potential. Given that Han’s early adventures do not need to be tied to the Empire, it leaves story lines open with the opportunity to really give fans something different. They can explore new galaxies and crazy creatures and bring in a wide array of new characters.”

The upcoming Han Solo movie has added a new star today as Variety reports that Phoebe Waller-Bridge, best known for starring on Amazon‘s Fleabag, has joined the Phil Lord and Chris Miller film. Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character, likewise, has not yet been revealed, but the trade reports that the role in question will be played via performance capture, similar to Lupita Nyong’o‘s role as Maz Kanata in The Force Awakens. Whether or not Phoebe Waller-Bridge is playing a pre-established Star Wars race or an all-new one remains to be seen.

BREAKING: Phil Lord and Chris Miller exit Han Solo movie

In a surprising turn of events, Phil Lord and Chris Miller have just exited the still-untitled Han Solo movie, currently in production.

“Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm in a statement just posted to StarWars.com.

“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew,” added Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
