Colin Trevorrow teases Jurassic World sequel and ‘open source’ dinosaur creation

After becoming the third-highest grossing film of all time last month, Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment finally announced plans for a Jurassic World sequel. Though the movie won’t hit theaters until 2018, development is already underway with Jurassic World’s director, Colin Trevorrow, and Derek Connolly currently scripting the film.

Speaking with Wired, Trevorrow offered a tease for the film’s plot, revealing that they’ll likely shy away from the traditional island and theme park setting.

“[It will not be] just a bunch of dinosaurs chasing people on an island,” Trevorrow tells the outlet. “That’ll get old real fast….I feel like the idea that this isn’t always going to be limited to theme parks, and there are applications for this science that reach far beyond entertainment. And when you look back at nuclear power and how that started, the first instinct was to weaponise it and later on we found it could be used for energy. And this isn’t something necessarily that was in the book but is a seed that I wanted to plant in this movie, is that might be able to grow in more of these movies if they decide to make more of them, is: What if this went open source? It’s almost like InGen is Mac, but what if PC gets their hands on it? What if there are 15 different entities around the world who can make a dinosaur?’

“And Dr Wu says in the film, when he’s warning Dr Mesrani, ‘We’re not always going to be the only ones who can make a dinosaur’. I think that’s an interesting idea that even if we don’t explore fully in this film, there is room for this universe to expand. I shouldn’t use the word universe, because people will think we’re making a Jurassic World universe – we’re not.”

Trevorrow will not return to direct the Jurassic World sequel, which is currently set for release on June 22, 2018. Stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are confirmed to return for the film which will once again see producer Frank Marshall and Steven Spielberg leading the team of filmmakers for the next chapter in the franchise.

Jurassic World sequel to be directed by J.A. Bayona!

It was previously reported that The Impossible director J.A. Bayona was in contention to direct the Jurassic World sequel, but due to commitments with World War Z 2 it seemed unlikely to happen. Now, following Bayona’s departure from the film, Universal Studios has confirmed that he will be stepping behind the camera for the 2018 release.

Bayona’s other works include the 2007 horror film The Orphanage, two episodes of the Showtime series Penny Dreadful, and the upcoming film A Monster Calls.

Jurassic World 2 will be scarier, Have more animatronics

The upcoming Jurassic World 2 is set to begin production in Hawaii and London in February 2017, and Jurassic Outpost (via Collider) caught up with the sequel’s executive producer/co-writer Colin Trevorrow (who directed Jurassic World) to give us an idea of what to expect.

“It will be more suspenseful and scary,” said Trevorrow. “It’s just the way it’s designed; it’s the way the story plays out. I knew I wanted Bayona to direct it long before anyone ever heard that was a possibility, so the whole thing was just built around his skillset.”

It’s good to know that The Orphanage director J.A. Bayona will be applying some of his scarifying abilities to the new film. We’re also happy to report there will be much more in the way of animatronics, as seen in the original trilogy.

“There will be animatronics for sure,” Trevorrow confirmed. “We’ll follow the same general rule as all of the films in the franchise, which is the animatronic dinosaurs are best used when standing still or moving at the hips or the neck. They can’t run or perform complex physical actions, and anything beyond that you go to animation. The same rules applied in ‘Jurassic Park.’ I think the lack of animatronics in ‘Jurassic World’ had more to do with the physicality of the Indominus, the way the animal moved. It was very fast and fluid, it ran a lot, and needed to move its arms and legs and neck and tail all at once. It wasn’t a lumbering creature. We’ve written some opportunities for animatronics into [Jurassic World 2]—because it has to start at the script level—and I can definitely tell you that Bayona has the same priorities, he is all about going practical whenever possible.”

Finally, those expecting the Jurassic War envisioned by Vincent D’Onofrio’s character in the first one may be disappointed that’s not where the sequel is headed.

“I’m not that interested in militarized dinosaurs, at least not in practice,” Trevorrow remarked. “I liked it in theory as the pipe dream of a lunatic. When that idea was first presented to me as part of an earlier script it was something that the character that ended up being Owen was for, that he supported, something that he was actively doing even at the beginning. Derek and I, one of our first reactions was ‘No if anyone’s gonna militarize raptors that’s what the bad guy does, he’s insane.’”

In a final bit of news, fans will be happy to learn that Chris Pratt has received the script and can’t wait to work with Bryce Dallas Howard again.

Box Office: 'Jurassic World 2' $150M Opening Takes Big Bite Out of 'Incredibles 2'

"Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" pushed "Incredibles 2" off a cliff with its $150 million domestic opening. However, it never even came close to the $209 million debut for 2015's "Jurassic World." That's OK, the "Jurassic" sequel was never expected to open THAT huge.

"Fallen Kingdom" surpassed the $147.1 million opening of "Furious 7" in 2015. So that's impressive. But it pales in comparison to the $180 million "Incredibles 2" picked up last weekend for its opening. That's OK, "Jurassic World 2" was never expected to open THAT big either.

Still, the dinos pushed the supers to second place for Disney-Pixar's second weekend. "The Incredibles" made $80.9 million, a drop of more than 55 percent from its first week. So far, "Incredibles 2" has $350.3 million domestic and $134.7 foreign for a current balance of $485M. But it's just getting started on the world stage.

'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom' Passes $1 Billion at Box Office

"Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" may never reach the $1,671,713,208 heights of "Jurassic World." But it did just crack the $1 billion milestone, thanks to opening early and strong in the international markets. We've only had it here for three weeks, since it opened June 22 on the domestic front.

But thanks to the worldwide market, "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" now has just over $1 billion. And that's before picking up more money over this upcoming post-Fourth of July weekend. ("Ant-Man and the Wasp" will surely be No. 1, but "Jurassic World 2" may follow, pushing "Incredibles 2" to third.)

As Deadline noted, this makes "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" the seventh film ever to reach $1 billion for Universal
