Producer David Heyman on J.K. Rowling's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Last week, Warner Bros. made the surprise announcement that the studio is re-teaming with author J.K. Rowling for an adaptation of her faux textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, to be set in the cinematic world of Harry Potter. At today's press junket for Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity, eight-time "Potter" producer David Heyman made a brief statement regarding the ambitious return to the "Wizarding World."

"I can't talk really about it yet," he said. "All I can say is that it's great. Jo had no need to go back to this universe or world. It's not Harry Potter per se, but the world of Harry. She's chosen to do so because she felt a need to tell a story. That she's doing it means that it's going to be very, very special."

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is said to be the first in a new big screen series and will follow the adventures of Newt Scamander, a full 70 years before the events depicted in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Warner Bros. CEO on J.K. Rowling's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Warner Bros. Pictures CEO Kevin Tsujihara was interview by The New York Times and revealed a bit more about what the studio is planning for J.K. Rowling's upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them slate.

It was previously announced that "Fantastic Beasts" would be a film series, but now Tsujihara says they are specifically developing a trilogy.

The article says: "Wherever he learned the skill, his deft touch became clear to Hollywood's creative community last September. That is when Warner announced that Ms. Rowling had agreed to adapt for the big screen her 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,' a 2001 book billed as one of Harry Potter's Hogwarts textbooks. Three megamovies are planned. The main character will be a 'magizoologist' named Newt Scamander. The stories, neither prequels or sequels, will start in New York about seven decades before the arrival of Mr. Potter and his pals."

It’s official: Eddie Redmayne to lead Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them!

It’s official! Academy Award-winning actor Eddie Redmayne has been cast as Newt Scamander in Warner Bros. Pictures’ much-anticipated wizarding world adventure Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Eddie Redmayne has emerged as one of today’s most extraordinarily talented and acclaimed actors,” says Silverman. “We are thrilled to welcome him into J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, where we know he will deliver a remarkable performance as Newt Scamander, the central character in ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.'”

Redmayne will play J.K. Rowling’s creation, Newt Scamander, the Wizarding World’s preeminent magizoologist, who in his travels has encountered and documented a myriad of magical creatures, ultimately leading to his penning the Hogwarts School textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Making her screenwriting debut on the film, Rowling has developed the character of Scamander and his primer — taken from her globally beloved Harry Potter series — to further explore the unique wizarding world she has crafted in print and bring it to life on screen.

David Yates, who directed the last four Harry Potter films, is helming the new film.

“Eddie is a fearless actor, brimming with invention, wit and humanity,” he says. “I couldn’t be more excited about the prospect of working with him as we start this new adventure in J.K. Rowling’s wonderful world, and I know she feels the same way.”

The film is being produced by David Heyman, producer of all eight of the blockbuster Harry Potter features; J.K. Rowling; Steve Kloves, who scripted all but one of the Harry Potter films; and Lionel Wigram, who served as an executive producer on the last four installments of the franchise.

Eddie Redmayne won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the 2014 biopic The Theory of Everything. His portrayal of Stephen Hawking in that film also brought him Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA and Golden Globe Awards. In 2012, Redmayne starred as Marius in Tom Hooper’s screen adaptation of the hit musical Les Misérables, with Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried. In 2010, Redmayne won a Tony Award for his performance in “Red,” which marked his Broadway debut. On screen, he next stars in Hooper’s true-life drama The Danish Girl, due out this November.

Warner Bros. Pictures has slated Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them for worldwide release in 3D and IMAX on November 18, 2016.

Katherine Waterston will co-star in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice) will star opposite Eddie Redmayne in Warner Bros. Pictures’ much-anticipated adventure Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, set in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Waterston will play the pivotal role of Tina, short for Porpentina, a witch who—unlike the beloved characters from Rowling’s “Harry Potter” books—works her magic in the U.S. She meets magizoologist Newt Scamander (Redmayne) when he stops in New York City on his travels to find and document magical creatures.

In making the announcement, Silverman said, “Katherine Waterston is a rising star, who was a revelation in our film ‘Inherent Vice,’ earning the praise of both critics and audiences. We are thrilled to have her back in the Warner Bros. family, especially in one of our most anticipated titles for 2016, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.’”

Katherine Waterston recently starred in Paul Thomas Anderson’s acclaimed film Inherent Vice, for which she shared in an Independent Spirit Award for Best Ensemble. She also stars in the upcoming biopic Steve Jobs, under the direction of Danny Boyle. Her other credits include the award-winning HBO series “Boardwalk Empire,” and the films The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, Night Moves, Being Flynn, Taking Woodstock and Michael Clayton.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them adds Colin Farrell

One of the few notable actors from across the pond to NOT appear in one of the eight “Harry Potter” films, Colin Farrell (In Bruges, Saving Mr. Banks) is making up for lost time as The Hollywood Reporter reveals the Irish heartthrob has signed on to co-star in Warner Bros.’ adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Farrell will take on the role of Graves, a wizard that Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) meets in New York.

Despite overall mixed reviews for the recent second season of HBO’s “True Detective,” Farrell has been earning high praise for his performance as corrupt Detective Ray Velcoro, with the 90-minute season finale set to air this Sunday. He will next be seen on the big screen opposite Anthony Hopkins in the supernatural thriller Solace as well as the surreal comedy The Lobster with Rachel Weisz.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them plot details revealed!

Following the photo reveal yesterday (view the images in previous posts), EW is back with more details on the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them plot!

The outlet reports that the film sees Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander coming to 1926 New York from England, for reasons they won’t disclose, with his trusty weathered case, a magical bag that is bigger on the inside and houses habitats for a number of magical creatures. In his travels, he discovers that American wizards are quite fearful of being outed to the public, who they call “No-Maj” instead of “Muggles,” and it’s in this wizard-phobic world that something happens causing Newt’s bag to burst open, setting free the magical monsters.

Fantastic Beasts will be comparable to Goblet of Fire

Entertainment Weekly has secured a quote from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them producer David Heyman in which he gives us a better idea of which Harry Potter movie this prequel will most emulate in terms of tone, namely 2005’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the Mike Newell-directed entry which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Heyman should know, too, because he produced all eight films in the Harry Potter cycle!

”[Fantastic Beasts has] got the charm of the fourth,” Heyman said. “It’s like the fourth. Mike talked about the fourth as being like an Indian musical — and it’s not that, but it’s got the humor of of that film. It has the romantic comedy, that fish-out-of-water humor, that very human, natural character comedy. And now David is always looking for truthful, human moments, it’s never just a gag, he’s grounding [the storytelling moments] in a reality. [Beasts] is very funny, it’s got a big heart, and there’s darkness too.”
