1638. Ο ιησουίτης καλόγερος Ροντρίγκεζ και ο καλόγερος Φρανσίσκο Γκάρπε καταφτάνουν από την Πορτογαλία στην Ιαπωνία, για να αντικαταστήσουν τον μέντορα τους, καλόγερο Φερέιρα που οι αναφορές τον θέλουν να έχει αποστατήσει. Εκεί βλέπουν ότι ο ντόπιος χριστιανικός πληθυσμός κινείται κρυφά. Οι ιαπωνικές αρχές τους εξαναγκάζουν να πατάνε πάνω στα «φούμι», τα οποία είναι τοπικά εικονίσματα που αναπαριστούν τον Ιησού και την Παναγία. Όσοι αρνούνται, φυλακίζονται και σκοτώνονται.

The drama, based on the Shusaku Endo novel, is set in the 17th century as two Jesuit priests face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and to spread the gospel of Christianity.

Andrew Garfield set to headline Silence

After years of planning, Martin Scorsese’s Silence appears to finally be moving forward. Variety reports that The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield has come aboard the project to headline.

Garfield, who is currently shooting The Amazing Spider-Man 2, is also well-known for roles in films like The Social Network and Never Let Me Go.

Liam Neeson boards Martin Scorsese’s Silence

Liam Neeson is set to play a leading role in Martin Scorsese’s next, the long-awaited Silence. Deadline reports that the Taken star will headline opposite the previously-attached Andrew Garfield and Ken Watanabe.

2014 is a busy year for Neeson. He next lends his voice to The LEGO Movie, re-teams with Unknown director Jaume Collet-Serra for Non-Stop, headlines writer-director Scott Frank’s A Walk Among the Tombstones and plays the lead villain in Seth MacFarlane’s western comedy A Million Ways to Die in the West.
