Abbey Lee takes Tirana role in The Dark Tower

After several false stars, it looks like a big screen adaptation of Stephen King‘s The Dark Tower series is finally becoming a reality. There’s some new casting on the project today, courtesy of Deadline, which reports that Mad Max: Fury Road star Abbey Lee has entered talks to play the role of Tirana opposite Idris Elba as Roland Deschain (The Gunslinger) and Matthew McConaughey as Randall Flag (The Man in Black).

Although the outlet notes that Tirana is the film’s female lead, the news may come as a surprise to fans of the books. The only Tirana that appears in the series of novels plays a relatively small role in the series’ seventh book.

Stephen King and Nikolaj Arcel talk The Dark Tower movie, confirm Idris Elba’s casting

The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed. So began the first entry in The Dark Tower novel series, The Gunslinger, but the journey for Stephen King’s famous book series to the big screen has been just as long and harrowing as Roland’s journey to the Dark Tower. Now it’s finally happening.

Both King and the film’s director and co-writer Nikolaj Arcel spoke with EW about the film, which Arcel revealed will begin shooting in South Africa in just seven weeks, and confirmed that Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey will star as the film’s hero and villain.

“What Stephen King does best is mixing the everyday, or what you might call the mundane, with the fantastical,” says Arcel. “In my view, [The Dark Tower] novels are a mix between sci-fi and fantasy and modern times. That exact mix is so Stephen King.”

King went on to reveal that the Dark Tower movie will open with the first line from the book as read above, but that the film itself will jump into the middle of the story instead of starting with the first book.

“[The movie] starts in media res, in the middle of the story instead of at the beginning,” King says. “Which may upset some of the fans a little bit, but they’ll get behind it, because it is the story.”

Arcel went on to tease the film further, saying: “A lot of it takes place in our day, in the modern world.”

This could mean that the film will be adapting The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands, the novel that sees Roland and his ka-tet members Eddie and Susannah attempting to bring a young boy, Jake, to their world from New York City.

Arcel went on to talk about casting Idris Elba in the role, saying:

“For me, it just clicked. He’s such a formidable man,” says Arcel. “I had to go to Idris and tell him my vision for the entire journey with Roland and the ka-tet. We discussed, who is this character? What’s he about? What’s his quest? What’s his psychology? We tried to figure out if we saw the same guy. And we absolutely had all the same ideas and thoughts. He had a unique vision for who Roland would be.”

On the flip side, Arcel says the casting of Matthew McConaughey made just as much sense.

“Matthew is an incredible actor who can do anything. That’s how I feel about Walter Padick. He could do anything…He is this timeless sorcerer, and being a Stephen King fan, I’ve read and experienced Walter in various iterations. He has a very interesting way of seeing the world. He sees it with a sort of delight, even though he is obviously on the wrong side of the light-and-dark spectrum. He’s someone I’ve been having a lot of fun with.”

Sony currently has The Dark Tower set for a release on January 13, 2017. Expect even more announcements from Mid-World in the coming weeks.

Elba and McConaughey talk The Dark Tower characters

The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed
.

Thus began the first Dark Tower novel by Stephen King in 1982, and so too will begin the feature film adaptation when it hits theaters next year.

Entertainment Weekly has revealed the cover for their latest issue and it features none other than the stars of the film, Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey as The Gunslinger and the man in black (aka Walter o’Dim, aka Randall Flagg). Journey below to see the all-new photos from the film and to hear what the pair have to say about the movie.

“There’s a mystical element to him,” Elba tells the outlet. “He’s about 200 years old. He’s been around for a long time, and has a deep-rooted connection with the [supernatural] nature of the film. Roland’s completely tuned into that. When you meet him, he’s very much a stoic man, doesn’t want to talk. But when you get to know him, he really knows quite a bit about the world and his world’s history…When we meet Roland he’s a bit lost. He’s been walking around for a long time, so he definitely feels like a man who’s… coiled….Until he meets Jake.”

Jake Chambers, played by Tom Taylor in the film, is an important character in the mythology of The Dark Tower and the focal point of both Roland and the man in black’s plans in the feature film.

“He’s really pent up and releases his soul through [defending] the boy,” Elba added.

Jake lives in our reality (as opposed to the apocalyptic Mid-World that Roland hails from) and has the ability to “Shine,” something Stephen King fans should recognize immediately as the power Danny Torrance has in The Shining.

This power is why both Roland and Walter want Jake. Walter needs him to bring the titular tower crashing down (opening up a whole other can of worms for the entire multiverse) and Roland needs the tower preserved for his own journey.

One of the places we see McConaughey’s man in black wandering in the photos is The Dixie Pig, a hideaway for ne’er-do-wells and monsters of all kinds in our own world which also has a door to Mid-World.

“Well, he is a man, actually,” McConaughey says of the villain. “They wanted to go very human and grounded with this. Obviously there are mythical proportions of good and evil in Walter. But we didn’t want to go overly fantastic. That would drop the humanity. So Walter, for me, is a man who exposes hypocrisies.”

EW goes on to reveal how involved creator Stephen King has been in developing the film, with the man himself saying he made his own modifications to the script.

“I took a pen and cut Roland’s dialogue to the bone,” the author tells them. “The less he says the better off, and why not? Idris Elba can act with his face. He’s terrific at it. He projects that sense of combined menace and security. [Roland] is the Western hero, the strong, silent type: ‘Yep,’ ‘Nope,’ and ‘Draw.’”

Fans of The Dark Tower books have no doubt noticed that the film is missing two of its key characters in Eddie and Susannah Dean, and EW reveals they won’t be making the journey in the first film; however, should The Dark Tower be a success and a sequel follows, they will join the Ka-tet.

Director Nikolaj Arcel also confirmed what many had theorized about the film, that it’s actually a sequel to the book series and not a straight adaptation.

“The hardcore fans of The Dark Tower series will know that this is actually a sequel to the books in a way,” Arcel says. “It has a lot of the same elements, a lot of the same characters, but it is a different journey.”

Όχι. :p
