Marti Noxon to write Tomb Raider

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” writer and producer Marti Noxon has signed on to rewrite MGM and GK Films’ upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, Variety reports.

Noxon’s big screen work also includes I Am Number Four and Fright Night.

The original Tomb Raider game was published in 1996 by the London-based video game company Eidos and went on to become one of the most successful video games of the time. Eidos (including Crystal Dynamics) is now part of an international interactive entertainment group, Square Enix. A pop culture phenomenon, the original Tomb Raider games have sold over 35 million game units worldwide making Lara Croft one of the most recognized names in the gaming industry. Most recently, Square Enix released the highly-anticipated reboot of the series, simply titled Tomb Raider, on March 5, 2013 to critical acclaim.

In 2001 and 2003, Paramount Pictures made two feature films starring Angelina Jolie which grossed a total of $432 million worldwide.

Alicia Vikander is Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider reboot!

Despite previous reports pointing toward Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ Daisy Ridley as a potential candidate, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) has signed on to play Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot.

Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug (The Wave) will direct the film which has a script by Transformers 5 scribe Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Warner Bros. is set to distribute the film with MGM. They will produce the feature with GK Films.

Walton Goggins cast as villain in new Tomb Raider movie!

Variety brings word that Emmy-nominated actor Walton Goggins (Justified, The Hateful Eight, Django Unchained) has been tapped to play the main villain in the new Tomb Raider movie. He joins Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), who will play the titular Lara Croft in the video game adaptation.

Dominic West cast as Lara Croft’s father in Tomb Raider reboot

Earlier this week, it was confirmed that production has officially begun on the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, and now The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the cast has grown with the addition of Dominic West (The Wire, Punisher: War Zone) as Lara Croft’s father. The film is set to center around Lara’s attempts to finish her father’s research and uncover ancient secrets in order to clear his disgraced name.

Vanity Fair has debuted the first Lara Croft photos from the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, featuring Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl, Ex Machina) as the title hero. “When I was asked to take on this role I got really excited—Lara Croft is a truly iconic character,“ Vikander stated. “I think people can identify with her for lots of different reasons, but for me I very much see her as a model for many young women. She’s trying to carve out her place in the world and connect her future with her past. She also has a fantastic mix of traits—tough, smart, vulnerable, plus she’s kick ass! She is also uniquely different to other characters I have taken on previously. It’s a lot of fun trying to get into Lara’s head and the challenge of getting to grips with such a physical role is an element of this project that I find an absolute thrill.”
