Set in the 26th century, "Alita: Battle Angel" tells the story of Alita, an amnesiac female cyborg who is rescued from a scrapyard by a doctor. Robert Rodriguez to direct Alita: Battle Angel movie for Fox

Twentieth Century Fox and James Cameron have announced that the long in-development Battle Angel movie is still happening, except now director Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk Till Dawn, Sin City) will helm the feature, titled Alita: Battle Angel. Cameron and Jon Landau will produce for Fox under their Lightstorm Entertainment banner.

“Robert and I have been looking for a film to do together for years,” Cameron said. “So I was pumped when he said he wanted to do Battle Angel. He’s very collaborative and we’re already like two kids building a go-kart, just having fun riffing creatively and technically. This project is near and dear to me, and there’s nobody I trust more than Robert, with his technical virtuosity and rebel style, to take over the directing reins. We’re looking forward to learning a lot from each other while we make a kick-ass epic.”

“Battle Angel is an incredibly rich and vibrant epic in the tradition of Jim Cameron’s spectacular, character-driven films,” Rodriguez added. “Getting to work from Jim’s terrific and visionary script while learning the cutting edge techniques he’s pioneered is a master class in filmmaking. Who will headline Alita: Battle Angel?

In development for years and years, Twentieth Century Fox is finally moving forward with plans for Alita: Battle Angel. As reported last fall, James Cameron and Jon Landau will produce the manga adaptation under their Lightstorm Entertainment banner with Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk Till Dawn, Sin City) set to direct. Now, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that three names have emerged to potentially play the Alita: Battle Angel lead. Those names include Maikia Monroe (It Follows, Independence Day Resurgence), Rosa Salazar (The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, Man Seeking Woman) and Zendaya (K.C. Undercover, Spider-Man: Homecoming).

Jackie Earle Haley joins Alita: Battle Angel cast

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the cast of the long-awaited Alita: Battle Angel has grown by one more with the addition of Jackie Earle Haley. The outlet doesn’t know what character he will be playing but specifies it will be a “monstrous cyborg in a villain role” which will require CG and green screen animation to complete. He joins an Alita: Battle Angel cast that includes Rosa Salazar in the title role and Christoph Waltz as her father figure, Doctor Dyson.

Ed Skrein set as Alita: Battle Angel villain

The Alita: Battle Angel villain has been cast today as The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Ed Skrein (who recently menaced Deadpool as Francis, aka Ajax) will play the Manga’s cyborg foe Zapan. In the film version, Zapan will be in possession of the powerful Damascus Blade.

Ed Skrein joins a cast that currently includes Rosa Salazar in the title role, two-time Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz as Doctor Dyson, and Oscar nominee Jackie Earl Haley in an undisclosed role.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Nashville and The Fosters star Keean Johnson has landed the highly-coveted Alita: Battle Angel role of the love interest for Rosa Salazar’s title character. Johnson will play Hugo, a young man who teaches Alita how to play a gladiator-style game called Motorball.

Luke Cage’s Mahershala Ali joins Alita: Battle Angel

The Hollywood Reporter says that actor Mahershala Ali, who plays Luke Cage villain Cottonmouth, has landed one of the bad guy roles in the much-anticipated Alita: Battle Angel. Ali will play Vector, who runs and fixes matches for a gladiator-style game called Motorball that Alita (Rosa Salazar) must play.

Following her X-Men: Apocalypse debut as Jubilee, actress Lana Condor has lined up another comic book property. Variety has the news, reporting that Lana Condor has joined the cast of Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel. She’ll play the role of Koyomi K. who, in the original manga, was an orphaned girl who grows up in the Scrapyard.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the cast of Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming manga adaptation, Alita: Battle Angel, has snagged another cast member with the addition of Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind, Requiem for a Dream). Connelly is set to play one of the villains in the film.

Michelle Rodriguez secretly joined Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel

Despite production wrapping last week, EW brings word that actress Michelle Rodriguez is part of the cast of Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming manga adaptation, Alita: Battle Angel, and it somehow remained a secret this whole time. Rodriguez is set to play Gelda, whom the outlet describes as a slim cyborg warrior in the source material. This marks Rodriguez’s third collaboration with the director following the two Machete films.
