The PHANTOM is the first completely new State of the Art tonearm from Graham Engineering since the first Model 1.0 was announced over 15 years ago. It incorporates all that we have learned about tonearm design up to the present time.
The PHANTOM incorporates features and design changes that are not possible to include within the 2.2 structure. This is an advanced, new design concept in the field of pivoted tonearms, and will necessarily be somewhat more costly than the 2.2. The Phantom will maintain the same mounting hole pattern as the 1.5 - 2.2 series arms, so most existing arm mounts will work without modification for this exciting new design.
The current Model 2.2 remains the leader at it's price point, while the 2.1 continues to be the benchmark performer at the entry level for high-end tonearms. Owners of these fine products may rest assured that they will still receive the outstanding performance and reliability for which the award winning design is known, and for many years to come.
The PHANTOM, an all-out, state-of-the-art tonearm, is currently in the final stages of component manufacturing, and is scheduled for production and to begin shipping in October.
The Phantom's unique design will incorporate several new, advanced concepts which are the subject of patent applications. Please check back for further updates - including photos - about the design features and availability of our newest and most advanced product ever. We are sure you'll agree that it was worth the wait!
A few updated, hints:
--A new, more substantial removable arm tube that is FAR superior to the older designs, and becomes essentially as strong, and with even better damping, as any fixed arm tube design we know about.
--True neutral balance, meaning no appreciable change in tracking force with changes in height (i.e., over warps).
--Absolutely true vertical pivoting of the stylus tip major axis. This becomes important during playback of warped records, as any tilting of the headshell (viewed from the front) during this motion will cause channel imbalance and compromised tracking. Currently, no true unipivot can accomplish this, although there are examples of pseudo-unipivots (designs with more than one contact point in the pivoting system - hence, "pseudo", meaning not exactly), and some fixed-bearing arms can correct for this; however, even these designs have other limitations in dynamic tracking accuracy that only the Phantom has overcome.
-- The above features are combined with a dual-system damping design, providng the Phantom with unprecedented control and stability to a degree simply not available in any other tonearm design.
-- .... And there are several other unique design features - the subjects of patent applications - on this supreme design, resulting in a sonic presentation that is simply startling! This is a thoroughly-researched and finely tuned design, using the proven laws of physics and logical engineering to work the Phantom magic; there are no band-aid approaches here! We feel confident that, once the Phantom is experienced, there will be no other choice.
And very soon, now...
Prepare to have your analog system deliver the very best in playback - and with features not seen before with ANY other tonearm, regardless of design.
