Worldwide sales of TV dropped 21 per cent in Q1, according to the latest data from DisplaySearch. Year on year, the cost of plasma and LCD TV screens also plunged, falling 33 and 22 per cent respectively. The microdisplay TV category (rear projection screens built around LCD, SXRD and DLP technology) declined just 10 per cent, but DLP’s market share rose to 56 per cent.
The biggest worldwide TV brand, both in volume and value, continues to be Samsung: it claimed top spot in LCD sales, and second in plasma, MD rear projection and CRT. Close behind it was Korean rival LG, which ranked second in volume and fourth in revenue.
The battle for large screen dominance between LCD and plasma has also begun to heat up. For the first time, LCD became the dominant screen technology in the 40/44-inch segment. Plasma led the 50-inch and larger TV market, with a 48 per cent share.
The biggest overall 1080p brand was Sony.
