Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Running Time: 1 hr. 46 min.
Release Date: July 15th, 2005 (wide)
MPAA Rating: Not Rated.
Distributor: Warner Bros.
Starring: Johnny Depp, Freddie Highmore, David Kelly, AnnaSophia Robb, Helena Bonham Carter
Directed by: Tim Burton
Distributor: Warner Bros.

What's The Story?
There are five golden tickets hidden in candy bars scattered around the world. Anyone who finds one is invited to meet the strange and mysterious chocolatier Willy Wonka and join him on a tour of his wondrous factory. For Charlie Bucket, a lonely kid from a poor family, finding a ticket could be the opportunity of a lifetime.

Three Good Reasons
• It's the fourth collaboration between director Tim Burton and star Johnny Depp, who always bring out the best (and weirdest) in each other.
• Screenwriter John August directly adapted the Roald Dahl novel. He didn't see the 1971 original film until after he was finished.
• Depp recommended Freddie Highmore for the role of Charlie after working with the young actor in "Finding Neverland."

Bet You Didn't Know
The fifth movie for Tim Burton and Johnny Depp -- the stop-motion animated "Tim Burton's Corpse Bride" -- will hit theaters this September.

Fantastic Four

Running Time: 2 hrs. 03 min.
Release Date: July 8th, 2005 (wide)
MPAA Rating: Not Rated.
Distributor: Twentieth Century Fox
Starring: Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis, Chris Evans, Julian McMahon
Directed by: Tim Story
Distributor: Twentieth Century Fox

What's The Story
Cosmic radiation turns four scientists into a family of superheroes: Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, who can elongate his body; Susan Storm/Invisible Woman, who can become transparent and create force fields; Johnny Storm/Human Torch, who can control fire and fly; and Ben Grimm/The Thing, a misshapen monster with superhuman strength. Together they battle the evil Doctor Doom.

Three Good Reasons
• Flame on! The Fantastic Four are the first superheroes Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created with Marvel Comics, so it's time they got their movie.
• Michael Chiklis is a great choice to play the old-school brawler, Ben Grimm - a guy who still uses words like "clobber."
• An effects-laden action film with a bunch of superheroes running around? This is what summer's all about.

Bet You Didn't Know
In 1978, there was an animated Fantastic Four TV show, but NBC replaced the Human Torch with a happy, floating little robot friend named H.E.R.B.I.E. because they feared dangerous "imitatable behavior."

Three Good Reasons

• Jessica Biel can make even a Navy flight suit hot.

Three Good Reasons
• What happens when the Brazilian director of "The Motorcycle Diaries" remakes a Japanese horror film? Who knows? But it sounds intriguing.

Bet You Didn't Know
The middle school team Lawrence coaches is the Mount Vernon Smelters. A "smelter" is one who melts or fuses an ore to separate the metal from it.

The Brothers Grimm

MPAA Rating: PG-13 for violence, frightening sequences and brief suggestive material.
Distributor: Dimension Films
Starring: Matt Damon, Heath Ledger, Monica Bellucci, Jonathan Price, Lena Headey
Directed by: Terry Gilliam
Distributor: Dimension Films

What's The Story?
Before they were writers, Jake and Will Grimm were con men, using their knowledge of folktales to scam villages to pay them for protection from "enchanted" creatures. Their scheme catches up with them, though, when the French government enlists them to track down a real evil sorceress who's been kidnapping young women.

Three Good Reasons
• Visionary director Terry Gilliam brings his eye for the fantastic to the world of fairy tales.
• Who better to play a sultry yet scary witch than Italian seductress Monica Bellucci?
• It's written by Ehren Kruger, the screenwriter of fright-fests like "The Ring" and the upcoming "The Skeleton Key."

Bet You Didn't Know
Gilliam's first solo film, "Jabberwocky," was also a period piece about fantastic creatures. The director had to threaten legal action against some distributors who tried to market the film as another Monty Python movie.

Must Love Dogs

Release Date: July 29th, 2005 (wide)

Directed by: Gary David Goldberg
Distributor: Warner Bros. Pictures

What's The Story?

When someone intriguing finally responds to the ad, Sarah decides to borrow Mother Theresa, her brother's dog, and plunge in.

Three Good Reasons
• Diane Lane's gets the chance to really carry a film after her Oscar nomination for "Unfaithful."
• When John Cusack makes a romantic comedy, you can be pretty sure it's gonna be interesting, even for the guys.
• The great Christopher Plummer plays Sarah's Irish father, who's also re-entering the dating realm and has a randier experience with it.
