- Digital Projection Unveils Native 2:35, Full 1080p Home Theater Projector

Digital Projection International (DPI), an Emmy Award-winning manufacturer of high-performance projection systems, announces the dVision Scope 1080p, a native 2:35:1 precision DLP projector delivering over 2.75 million pixels of imagery when scope HD content is displayed. The 2560 x 1080 dVision Scope delivers a true 1080p solution for 2:35 aspect content without optical stretching, and without the need for an anamorphic lens solution. Through a capable combination of superior horizontal resolution and intuitive input analyzing firmware, the dVision Scope 1080p delivers the CE channel's only anamorphic lens-free, full resolution, constant height projector available today.
DPI's single-chip dVision Scope 1080p delivers 2.75 million pixels of detail due to its 2560 x 1080 resolution. The higher native resolution means high-definition content experienced through the dVision Scope 1080p attains a truly awe-inspiring level of entertainment quality and performance. The superior pixel density results in imagery with more resolution detail and higher small area contrast than what was previously thought possible in the CE industry. Having far more pixels than a traditional 1920 x 1080 display also ensures that no optical stretching is needed to achieve a 2:35:1 aspect ratio, guaranteeing that no image distortion is introduced. The additional pixels also provide the benefit of actually increasing displayed resolution when the wider, scope content is presented.
In addition to the unprecedented pixel density, the dVision Scope 1080p presents a superior solution for moving between 1.78:1 and 2.35:1 aspect ratio content (or any content wider than 1.78). Traditionally, an anamorphic lens has been required in order to move between different aspect ratios while displaying constant image height. While this approach produces solid results, anamorphic lens solutions add significant cost, as well as mechanical and optical complexity to a home theater system. Equally as important, anamorphic optics consume about 10% of the projector's brightness while also reducing the contrast ratio. Bypassing the need for an anamorphic lens when employed in a constant height application, the dVision Scope 1080p presents a compelling and cost effective alternative to purchasing and installing a peripheral anamorphic lens system.
No anamorphic optics are required when the dVision Scope 1080p projector is employed in a constant height application. When 1.78 content is being viewed, that content is simply displayed by the projector at native 1080p resolution. When wider aspect ratio content is presented, the wider content continues to be displayed at 1080 pixels of vertical resolution, so the vertical height of the image is maintained. Horizontally, the image is re-sized to as much as 2560 pixels, depending on the aspect ratio of the source being displayed. The projector's aspect ratio is thus adjusted so that the wider content is presented with increased horizontal resolution (beyond the 1920 horizontal pixels associated with 1080p content). Specifically, when scope content is presented, the projector automatically detects the presence of the "letterbox" black bars within the signal, and immediately re-sizes the image to fill the height of the DMD (1080p) while also presenting the proper aspect ratio by increasing the horizontal pixels employed.
The new dVision Scope 1080p projector inherits the field-proven reliability and exceptional optical qualities of DPI's long-respected dVision series. Suitable for home entertainment venues with medium to large screens, the Scope 1080p is quiet, elegantly designed and offers a diversity of system capabilities. Installation flexibility is assured through an extensive array of ultra-accurate optics, which provide throw ratios as short as .8:1 and as long as 4.5:1.
Projector lumens and black level can be further optimized to suit venue conditions through the straightforward adjustment of the motorized lens iris. Additionally, the Scope 1080p's quick-change motorized lens mount provides a broad range of horizontal and vertical lens shift, allowing the projectors to be placed in a wide variety of locations in relation to the screen. Intuitive user controls and comprehensive source compatibility assure all dVision displays are simple to integrate, control and operate.

Mitsubishi is planning to unveil a new mid-priced 3D 1080p home theater projector at CEDIA on Sept 8. This all new DLP-based projector will be rated at 1600 lumens, 30,000:1 full on/off, and 700:1 ANSI contrast. The MAP price will be $3,495.

We've had an advance look at the HC7800D, enough to pass along some initial impressions but not enough to do a full review. Two items stand out as particularly remarkable. First, the 3D image is as clean as we've yet seen. Cross talk is reduced to somewhere between negligible and completely invisible depending on how good your eyes are, and the bizarre motion artifacts that plagued many of the first generation 3D machines are gone entirely. The rapid rowing sequence in The Ultimate Wave: Tahiti looked even tighter than it did on the Panasonic AE7000, which itself is a major step in performance beyond earlier 3D projectors.

Second, the 2D to 3D conversion is remarkable. This is the first time we've seen 2D to 3D conversion that was worth the bother. Normally that conversion provides just enough increase in depth perspective to be noticeable but not enough to be impressive. As is true of all 2D to 3D conversions, the depth remains entirely behind the plane of the screen. But on the HC7800D, so much depth perspective is achieved that it begins to resemble authentic 3D rather than a conversion. We'd need to spend more time exercising it before making any final assessment, but from what we saw, this may be the first implementation of 2D to 3D conversion that I would actually use in my own theater."

Mitsubishi HC7800D

Mitsubishi Electric Visual Solutions America, Inc. will introduce one of its best 3D projectors, the HC7800D, at the CEDIA Home Theater Show in Indianapolis, September 8-10, 2011 in Booth #5537. A major addition to its line of large screen visual displays, the HC7800D is the first in the line that features the latest DLP chip that enables 3D technology.

"Mitsubishi is known for pushing the visual technology envelope, especially when creating the biggest, boldest 3D images," said Wayne Kozuki, product manager, Mitsubishi Electric Visual Solutions America. "We started selling 3D home theater products in 2007, and we're excited to add the HC7800D to our line because it shows some of the best 3D images ever seen from a front projector. It will be a hot model with our latest proprietary features added to our full line of 3D-ready large screen displays."

Mitsubishi Electric's new mid-range HC7800D uses Texas Instruments' latest DLP® .065-inch DMD chip to create exciting, vibrant 3D images in full high-definition, 1080P resolution. Its ultra-hushed fan creates 25 dBa in low mode, so you'll only hear the sweet sounds of quiet dialogue or music during your movie or television show, not an annoying fan hum.

The projector also boasts an amazingly long lamp life of up to 5000* hours in low mode. This provides years of typical use before a lamp change. Its one-year limited warranty is also one of the best lamp warranties in the industry.

Mitsubishi Electric's new HC7800D home theater projector blasts an impressive 1600 lumens used to create high-brightness, high-contrast (up to 30,000:1 full on/full off, up to 700:1 ANSI contrast ratio) images that are smooth, dazzling and true to the original 2D and 3D content.

The HC7800D shows impressive native 3D images with virtually no crosstalk when using its high-performance proprietary active shutter glasses. The projector is also one of the few models in its category with one of the industry's best 2D-to-3D Frame Rate Conversion using Mitsubishi's own algorithms in calculating and interpolating multiple depth levels in a 2D image, resulting in a near-perfect simulation of a true 3D frame of vision. This new, high-speed frame reproduction technology crafts detailed, high-definition 3D images with minimum crosstalk or distortion so 3D content appears to literally jump off the screen, even in high speed action scenes.

Two of the latest HDMI™ version 1.4 inputs support 3D signals, as well as provide easy set-up options for multiple video inputs. The projector's RS232 support offers plug-and-play connectivity with third-party remote operations for easy installation and control.

The HC7800D will be available third quarter 2011 through authorized Mitsubishi Electric distributors and dealers, just in time for the year-end holiday gift giving season, priced at $3495. It comes with Mitsubishi's two-year limited warranty on parts and labor.

New JVC Home Theater Projectors Display Images With 4K Precision

Four new models upconvert images to four times the resolution of Full HD.

INDIANAPOLIS, September 8, 2011 - (Virtual Press Office) - JVC today introduced new home theater projectors that display 2D HD content with full 4K precision. They feature JVC’s new e-Shift technology capable of projecting images with 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution, four times that of full HD. The upconverting technology is available in four of seven new 3D-enabled projectors that boast a wide range of advancements, including higher native contrast than previous models for levels that remain unmatched by any other home theater projector.

The new projectors are the Procision Series DLA-X90R, DLA-X70R and DLA-X30, marketed by JVC’s Consumer Electronics Group, and the Reference Series DLA-RS65, DLA-RS55, DLA-RS4800 and DLA-RS45, available through JVC Professional Products Company. JVC’s 4K e-Shift technology is featured in the top four models, while all seven new projectors offer other advancements that boost picture quality, improve 3D performance and enhance functionality.

Earlier this year NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories, NHK Engineering Service Inc. and JVC Kenwood Corporation collaborated in the development of a Super High Vision projection system that utilizes e-Shift technology. Now, that technology is available in the DLA-X90R, DLA-X70R, DLA-RS65 and DLA-RS55. Using e-Shift, 2D HD content is upconverted and scaled to a 4K signal (3840 x 2160) and the e-Shift technology displays it at full 4K precision. Compared to a Full HD (1920 x 1080) image, that’s twice the horizontal and vertical resolution and four times the number of pixels, or over 8 megapixels. The result is a stunningly detailed image with minimal aliasing artifacts found in standard HD displays.

All seven projectors are 3D-enabled and offer several 3D performance and feature enhancements:

• 2D-to-3D Converter – Converts 2D program material to 3D using technology derived from JVC’s professional 2D-to-3D converter. Included are user adjustments for 3D depth and subtitle geometry correction;
• JVC’s 3D anamorphic feature combined with an optional anamorphic lens make it possible to enjoy 3D movies in the popular 2:35 scope format;
• Compatibility with a wider range of 3D broadcasts, including 1080p/24 and 720p side-by-side formats;
• Brighter 3D images than previous models are possible through the use of an improved driver that keeps the shutter on the active shutter 3D glasses open longer, thus allowing more light to enter, while at the same time minimizing cross talk;
• A Cross Talk Canceller further reduces cross talk through analysis of the left eye and right eye signals and applying appropriate correction;
• A parallax adjustment allows the user to tailor the 3D image effect;
• Direct access to 3D formats and settings on the remote control.

In addition, the top four models -- DLA-X90R, DLA-X70R, DLA-RS65 and DLA-RS55 – have been designed to achieve THX 3D certification and are scheduled for testing by THX. During the THX 3D certification process, more than 400 laboratory tests are conducted, evaluating color accuracy, cross-talk, viewing angles and video processing to ensure the superior out-of-the-box 3D and 2D display performance that home theater enthusiasts demand.

Other features shared by these four models include:

• ISF certification;
• Enhanced installation adjustment, including a new 1/16th pixel shift function to precisely tune convergence via 121 adjustment points (11 vertical x 11 horizontal) and an increased number of screen mode preset positions, up to a maximum of 255;
• An upgraded optical engine that further improves black level and native contrast;
• 7-Axis Color Management System;
• ISF and THX Calibration via corresponding software to allow advanced adjustment by certified ISF calibrators;
• Three Xenon lamp color modes that emulate the characteristics of high-end movie projectors.

Other enhancements new for all seven 2012 projectors are:

• Lens memory function – Three memory settings store custom focus, zoom and horizontal/vertical lens shift position. This allows a constant height display of 4:3, 16:9 and 2:35 scope content without an additional anamorphic lens;
• A LAN connection that provides enhanced system control and easy firmware or screen mode updates.

To provide enthusiasts with a true measure of performance, JVC has long focused on native contrast and refused to artificially enhance contrast specifications through the use of a dynamic iris. For 2012, native contrast has been improved across the entire line, ensuring that every frame consistently and faithfully reproduces peak whites and deep blacks.

The new flagship projectors, the DLA-X90R and DLA-RS65, are built using hand-selected, hand-tested components and provide a 120,000:1 native contrast ratio. For 3D viewing, both models come with two pairs of 3D glasses and a PK-EM1 3D Signal Emitter. Both projectors also have a three-year warranty.

The DLA-X70R and DLA-RS55 offer 80,000:1 native contrast ratio, while the DLA-X30 and DLA-RS45 offer 50,000:1 native contrast ratio. All four projectors come with a two-year warranty. The DLA-RS4800 is ISF certified, offers a 55,000:1 native contrast ratio, comes with a three-year warranty, and includes a spare lamp. JVC Active Shutter 3D Glasses and the PK-EM1 3D Signal Emitter are sold separately.

All seven new projectors feature three 0.7” 1920 x 1080 D-ILA devices and are designed around JVC’s third generation D-ILA High Dynamic Range optical engine that is optimized to provide exceptional native contrast ratios without a dynamic iris to artificially enhance contrast specifications. A directed light integration system and wire grid polarizer ensures optimum light uniformity and minimal crosstalk in the light path. In the top four models (DLA-X90R, DLA-X70R, DLA-RS65 and DLA-RS55) a combined 16-step lens and lamp aperture adjustment allow the user to optimize the f-number (relative aperture) of the optics system in all steps. The DLA-X30, DLA-RS45 and DLA-RS4800 feature a 16-step lens aperture.

The new JVC D-ILA home theater projectors will be available in November at the following prices:

DLA-X90R/DLA-RS65 $11,999
DLA-X70R/DLA-RS55 $7,999
DLA-RS4800 $4,995
DLA-X30/DLA-RS45 $3,499

In addition to the JVC PK-AG1 active shutter 3D glasses currently available, JVC announced new glasses – the PK-AG2, which are more compact, lighter and rechargeable. The PK-AG1 glasses remain available and are ideal for use over eyeglasses. Both models are compatible with the currently available PK-EM1 3D Signal Emitter.

Utilizing proprietary O-Path™ technology and ISF™ exacting calibration standards, the VX-11d projects ultra-high resolution and brightness, making it the perfect projector for the spectacular media rooms of today’s luxury residences.

“With the VideoXtreme series, Runco has developed projectors that deliver unmatched accuracy while allowing clients to completely eliminate black bars when watching cinema sources,” said Jennifer Davis, Runco VP Marketing. “By packaging our award-winning CineWide technology in the VideoXtreme series, Runco can offer discerning clientele an unparalleled viewing experience.”

Designed specifically for the custom installer who specializes in high-end theaters, the VX-11d is available with Runco’s exclusive, award-winning CineWide™ and CineWide with AutoScope™.
The first and leading 2.35:1 projection solution, CineWide has since been adopted industry wide to properly reproduce 2.35:1 CinemaScope™ movies. The addition of Vivix, with VirtualWide™ and new VirtualCinema™, removes the black bars from letterboxed content for non-CineWide configurations and expertly widens 16:9 content to fit into a 2.35:1 screen with minimal distortion on projectors with CineWide lenses. All video aspect ratios are supported without any loss of image integrity for the best possible imagery from all video sources, enhancing all digital and analog signals to near-high-definition quality. This technology combination allows VideoXtreme projectors to handle native HD content flawlessly while making standard-definition content appear near-HD quality.

The VX-11d features Runco’s Digital High-Definition (DHD) external video processor. The Runco DHD4 offers the most advanced alignment in Runco history, allowing for ultra-precise installation geometries, more extreme installation scenarios, and the removal of any pin-cushion effect that can be caused by 2.35:1 scaling, improving the CineWide technology. The DHD4 now also supports control over HDMI CEC in addition to the traditional IR and the expanded RS-232 connections. And for added dealer convenience, the new web interface allows for calibration from a laptop, smart phone, Apple iPhone, or iPad, which makes installation and set-up even easier for the installer. In addition, the Runco DHD4 offers four HDMI inputs and three composite video connections.

Runco Unveils Its New 3Dimension D-113d Projectors Incorporating the Panavision 3D System

Runco provides the brightest CSV projection system available in the private market, enabling an unrivaled 2D and 3D experience without requiring a special screen.

Indianapolis, IN – CEDIA EXPO 2011 – Runco, the leading brand in luxury display solutions, is pleased to announce the latest extension of its 3Dimension family, the new 3Dimension™ D-113d projection system. The D-113d pairs Runco’s unique, award-winning Constant Stereoscopic Video™ (CSV) approach with the optical filters and glasses of the Panavision 3D System – which has been developed for premiere commercial cinemas. The result is the brightest CSV projection in the world, and an exceptional 3D, as well as 2D, experience for private theaters.

“We are excited to be partnering with Runco to bring an unparalleled 3D experience to the private cinemas,” said Eric Rodli, General Manager, PV Omega, LLC, the company that is distributing the Panavision 3D System. “Runco’s leadership in the luxury market, combined with their reputation for technology advancement is well known and highly-respected. The collaboration has resulted in a system designed for the most demanding customers.”

The D-113d strengthens Runco’s legacy in the high-end projection market space, where Runco and its dealers have always dominated. Runco’s revolutionary 3D solution is based on proprietary CSV architecture—a vastly-superior approach to 3D visualization. Runco CSV enables seamless decoding, syncing and merging of stereo images to deliver a constant HD image to each eye without the flicker, distortion, or discomfort inherent in other approaches.

In the D-113d, Runco’s CSV technology is paired with the spectral filtration technology of the Panavision 3D System. In the Panavision 3D System, the entire visible spectrum is sliced into ten slim bands – with five directed to the left eye and five to the right. The result: each eye receives the same amount of total white light energy so the images appear equal in brightness and provide the truest color reproduction.

Runco has utilized this technology from the Panavision 3D System in its PreciseColor™ passive glasses. This differentiates Runco’s passive approach from other high-end 3D projection systems, which are based on “active” LCD shutter-glass technology.

Because the Runco system doesn’t require polarization, images can be shown on a white screen with its more even illumination and its superior color image quality. The same white screen can be used for both 2D and 3D.
“People have come to expect exceptional solutions from Runco,” stated Runco VP of Marketing Jennifer Davis. “Runco’s CSV is the perfect example as it delivers a constant HD image to each eye without the flicker, distortion or discomfort inherent in other 3D approaches. And by incorporating the exceptional quality of the Panavision 3D System, we’re bringing to the most discerning customers in the world a level of 3D quality that they simply haven’t seen before in their home theaters.”
Runco offers a broad range of lens options for optimization with different throws and screen sizes in any theater. The Runco 3Dimension Series is wrapped in a gorgeous, bench-made industrial design called Copenhagen. Runco’s Copenhagen design is inspired by both classic and modern Danish architecture and design, including the influential works of Arne Jacobsen, designer of the famous Swan Chair, and the playful shapes of trend-setting furniture designer Verner Panton. Elegant and unexpected materials, such as glass and vented metal, combine to make a personal statement that’s innovative and unique well beyond traditional electronics.

The D-113d ships with the new Runco 3Dimension processing system, which includes Runco’s latest, award-winning Digital High-Definition (DHD) external video processor. The D-113d 3Dimension Processing system not only provides exceptional scaling and processing, but adds to that decoding and playback of 3D content in compliance with the HDMI 1.4 standards. Just as the human brain makes sense of three-dimensional content, the 3Dimension processor ensures that the whole solution works as an integrated system.

The D-113d can be customized with Runco’s FinishPalette™, providing owners a unique level of personalization that reflects their own individual styles and decors. Runco’s Finish Palette enables full-color, large-format projector design options, including gallery of artist impressions and the option to custom-print your own artwork. Complementing the Finish Palette offering are 25, hand-finished signature colors to compliment any decor.

Runco’s New LightStyle Projector Opens New Opportunities for Big Screen Entertainment in the Home

Proprietary technology delivers high performance and a sleek design that installs with ease, fits the design of any room.

Indianapolis, IN – CEDIA EXPO 2011 – Runco, the leading brand in luxury display solutions, will showcase its new LightStyle™ LS-100d with NEAR™ (Next generation Extreme Aligned Reflection™) ultra-short throw (UST) lens system at CEDIA during its press conference on September 9th at 11:00 a.m. Delivering 92-inch diagonal image that fits any setting, the LS-100d combines unsurpassed performance and clever industrial design with an attractive price point. At a depth of only 18-inches, the projector can be mounted above or below for installation flexibility. Now homeowners have an affordable option for amazing in-home entertainment that offers a bigger and more compelling viewing experience over a flat panel TV. The result is an unsurpassed visual experience that must be seen to be understood.

“With the LS-100d, we’ve capitalized on the deep knowledge of Planar’s short-throw systems for professional and commercial applications, giving us the ability to offer a superior viewing performance for our residential customers looking for a big screen experience in their home,” said Jennifer Davis, Runco’s VP of Marketing. “Runco’s nearly maintenance-free, energy efficient InfiniLight LED illumination system delivers a stunning image in a form factor that reduces the complexity of a projection installation.”

Runco’s NEAR ultra-short throw lens in the LS-100d delivers picture quality and color to suit everything from playing the hottest games to streaming the latest movies.

“Runco’s legacy of technology innovation and design is evident in this new platform,” said Bob Dacundo, Partner of Phoenix Audio Video LLC. “This new Runco LS-100d is a real problem solver for our architect and design partners, and our mutual luxury clients, who want their homes to reflect the latest video technology in a way that works with their design aesthetic.”

LS-100d maximizes the benefits of Runco’s critically-acclaimed InfiniLight™ lampless LED illumination technology, resulting in 70 percent power savings and a lampless system with no maintenance. The InfiniLight system is calibrated at every start-up and the perceived brightness advantage of this architecture, an effect called “Q-lumens”, is even more pronounced after 1,000-2,000 hours of ordinary use. It’s much quieter than large format displays that often have industrial-strength fans to maintain operating temperature.

And, the LS-100d includes Runco’s upgraded, award-winning Digital High-Definition (DHD4) external video processor, whose Digital Compass™ capability makes perfect geometry possible. The DHD4 offers the most advanced alignment in Runco history, allowing for ultra-precise installation geometries and more extreme installation scenarios, ensuring that the whole solution works as an integrated system.

The LightStyle product line as a whole offers the greatest range of brightness and image performance for different rooms and viewing styles. Its small form factor makes transportation and installation easy, an ideal solution for efficient, high-rise living. For eco-conscious customers who are concerned with the power draw of a projector, studies have shown that an 85 or 103-inch plasma display can use up to eight times the power consumption of a LED projector.
