Producer's note:

Ah........Christmas records. Hundreds of them come out every year and most of them tend to be forgettable throwaways. And yet...... the Carols and many of the songs of Christmas are magnificent. Vanessa and I both love the message and the spirit of this holiday so much. We both love the classic Christmas recordings by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole and I also love some of the more obscure gems like the great folk-rock artist Bruce Cockburn's "Christmas". We tried to make this record in that tradition.

Most people know Vanessa Williams as a star who has been both a hitmaker and a successful actress in TV and Film but few really know her range...

What we have in Vanessa is an intensely dedicated performer with old school credibility and range that is very rare. It has been a privilege to watch her tear up the Peggy Lee classic "Winter Weather", and, in the same breath, sing an old Folk Carol with an Irish duo she discovered while listening to Fordham University's radio station WFUV. I don't think she has ever sounded better. The years on stage have added additional depth and warmth to her sound. It is thanks to her and some of the extraordinary musicians involved that this has been such a rich and musical experience. We hope you enjoy it.

Happy Holidays,

Rob Mathes

P.S. One last note. Vanessa had a song idea for a Winter's Lullaby to a child. I had been reading the Langston Hughes poems "Mother to Son" and "I Dream a World" and soon after, wrote "December Lullaby". It was humbling for Vanessa and I to watch Ossie Davis read "I Dream a World" over my orchestration. This is the legendary actor who gave the eulogy at Malcolm X's funeral and who knew Langston and had even written a play about his life. Being with him for the short time it took him to read this beautiful poem was an honor. We thank him for his presence, his example, and his authority.
