A poster on the Head-Fi forums found something rather interesting after his cat helped remove the decorative Techflex covering on his $300 Virtual Dynamics Power 3 "audiophile grade" power cord - roughly $15 worth of components, and one hell of a markup. High-end power cords are already one of the most controversial audio tweaks out there, and exposing the Power 3 for what it is - a couple of bucks worth of 14 AWG PVC insulated bulk wire (VD's "LiniPur" conductors) and some ferrite powder, (VD's "5 dielectric layers" ) shoved into some heavy braided-wall PVC tubing to make it appear thick and meaty, and put together with dirt cheap connectors and DIY build quality, certainly doesn't help proponents of high-end cords (like myself) win any arguments.

The sheer hypocritical irony of Virtual Dynamics taking other high-end companies to task for overcharging is quite amusing (unless you've paid hundreds or thousands of dollars for a VD product). From the Power 3 product page: "A growing trend in the audio industry is to price products outrageously high and then see what happens. Prestige established through price. Consider the following; if I take a bottle of wine and charge $10,000 for it, will that make the wine taste any better? For many the answer will be yes." Essentially, VD is doing exactly that with the Power 3, building the power cord equivalent of "Two Buck Chuck" Merlot, and charging twenty-year-old vintage ChΓΆteau Pichon-Longueville-Comtesse-de-Lalande prices. I shudder to think about what the $13,416 Genesis 1.1 power cord actually costs VD to build.

As I said in my previous article on high-end cables, a cable is a simple device that is responsible for the transfer of electrons from component to component. Using high quality conductors, insulators, and shielding can produce measurable, repeatable test results and can ultimately affect sound quality provided that the playback system has the necessary detail and resolution to reveal differences in cable designs. In order to differentiate themselves from the dozens of cable companies out there and justify stratospheric markups, brands like Virtual Dynamics have their marketing departments invent "features" like 4 levels of "speed of light" insulation and 4 levels of "dynamic filtering." Any high-end audio company that uses phrases like "stage 2 MkIV" this, and "level 3" that should raise a giant red flag.

The Head-Fi forums poster received a "free" Power 3 in a promotional deal, so taking the cord apart and losing the warranty wasn't a big deal. For the rest of us, checking under the hood to see if the parts used inside are high quality isn't a practical solution. What are the alternatives? One route is to build your own power cords. A few feet of Belden 83803, some ferrite cores and some Marinco connectors from Parts Express would make for an excellent cord for around $50. If you'd rather buy premade cords, try renting some from the Cable Company. Any cable is really only "worth" the improvement it makes in your system. If you don't feel a cable or power cord sounds as good as its price tag suggests it should, send it back.

Ηθικό δίδαγμα...
Μην αφήνεται τις γάτες σας να παίζουνε με τα καλώδια σας γιατί από super-dooper χαϊενδάς, μετά θα αισθανθείτε super-dooper μ@λ@κ@ς, αφού ξοδέψατε 300$ για ένα καλώδιο αξίας 15$ (ξέρω, ξέρω έχει R&D, o Κατασκευαστής κ.λπ. κ.λπ.)

Που να δεις τι έκανε η ψείρα μου όταν γλίστρησε από το κεφάλι μου και πιάστηκε από ένα power cable της nordost!

My cat tore up my Virtual Dynamics Power 3...

My cat decided that the techflex covering of my free Power 3 would make a nice scratching post, so I decided to remove all the techflex and just leave the bare tubing below.

Well I removed the techflex and was a bit disappointed at the build quality, so I Googled a few things.

I found out it's made from :

1. 1 Schurter 10 amp IEC - $5
2. 1 Hubbell 15a 3 prong plug - $5
3. 6 feet of Black, Green and White 14g THHN 600v Building Wire - ~$0.30 /foot = $1.80
4. 6 feet of clear braided garden hose - ~$0.50/foot = $3
5. ~1 pound of ferrous metal powder - can't find a price, I'm sure it's dirt cheap
6. a stick of hot glue - the Hubbell connector had a hole drilled in it and was filled with hot glue, the female end was just glued to the hose.
7. Approx. 6 inches of electrical tape
8. Large size heatshrink
9. Techflex

(These are first hit prices from my Google results. I'm sure if you had a business license and bought in bulk, these prices would swandive)



I paid Acoustic Chef $20 for shipping on my 'free' Power 3. I now feel like I paid for VD to build me a power 3.Thanks Acoustic Chef, at least I received an education on marketing for the $20.

I have more confidence in the power cord that came with my pc over this thing, heaven forbid it had a split in the pvc covering of one of the wires, I'm sure an electrical arc through that metal powder would be harmless...

Το ρεζιλίκι των δοκιμαστών κρασιού

Το 1998 ο Φρεντερίκ Μπροσέ, ερευνητής νευρολόγος στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Μπορντό, κάλεσε 54 εμπειρογνώμονες να δοκιμάσουν κρα σιά και να καταγράψουν τις εντυπώσεις τους. Πρώτα σερβίρισε ένα κόκκινο και ένα λευκό. Μετά σερβίρισε ένα άλλο κόκκινο και ένα λευκό. Κατέγραψαν τα σχόλιά τους.

Χωρίς να το ξέρουν όμως, τα κρασιά που σερβιρίστηκαν δεύτερα ήταν ίδια. Απλώς ο Μπροσέ είχε προσθέσει άγευστο κόκκινο χρώμα για τρόφιμα στο λευκό, κάνοντάς το κόκκινο. Ουδείς έγραψε ότι το δεύτερο ζευγάρι κρασιών είχε παρόμοια γεύση.

Αυτό που απέδειξε ο Μπροσέ ήταν ότι ο εγκέφαλος οικοδομεί την εμπειρία της γεύσης λαμβάνοντας υπόψη πληροφορίες από όλες τις αισθήσεις, και κυρίως από την όραση.

Ειναι αυτο που λεμε η γατα τον εκανε ρεντικολο των σκυλιων.

Αυτη η ζημια δεν μπορει να εγινε απο γατα.
Μαλλον απο ποντικο εγινε, και την φορτωθηκε η καυμενη η γατα που εφτασε αργοτερα στον τοπο του συμβαντος για να κυνηγησει τον ποντικο.

Διαβαστε επιτελους και λιγο Αγκαθα Κριστι ...

Εκτος και αν η γατα του Κυριου ειναι εκπαιδευμενη να δουλευει αλυσοπριονο.

Μόνο αν έβαλε τανίνες...
Που αυτές προσδίδουν γεύση (είναι στυφές) και προκαλούν το "βάψιμο" του ποτηριού, τη "στρογγυλάδα" της γεύσης στα κόκκινα κρασιά και γενικά το χαρακτήρα του κόκκινου που βλέπεις χωρίς καν να χρειαστεί να δοκιμάσεις...

Πάντως και η δικιά μου γάτα είχε μία αδυναμία στα καλώδια ηχείων μου αλλά τέτοια ζημιά δεν κατάφερε να κάνει με τίποτα!
Το μόνο που βλέπεις είναι κάποιες τρύπες στην εξωτερική μόνωση.

Πάντως και η δικιά μου γάτα είχε μία αδυναμία στα καλώδια ηχείων μου αλλά τέτοια ζημιά δεν κατάφερε να κάνει με τίποτα! Το μόνο που βλέπεις είναι κάποιες τρύπες στην εξωτερική μόνωση.

Δεν φτουράει μία. Η δικιά μου έφαγε μέχρι και τα αντικραδασμικά. :116:
