Arcam Black Box 5
Following the release of their upgraded Delta 1703 CD transport, Arcam have announced a matching high performance D/A converter, the Black Box 5. Like its predecessors, the Black Boxes I, 2 and 3 (there was no Black Box 4 since that number is apparently associated with death in parts of the Far East, where Arcam achieves some 25 per cent of its turnover) the new Unit can be used with almost any CD transport or as an upgrade unit in conjunction with a CD player carrying an optical or co-axial digital output. It automatically switches to lock on to the sampling rates of CD (44.lkl-lz), DAT (48kHz) and DAB (32kHz). Uniquely, when used with the Delta 1073 it provides a master digital oscillator output via a second optical link, overriding the 107.3's own internal oscillator to provide a single system clock which significantly reduces the digital 'jitter' widely believed to be an important factor in determining the sound quality of CD players. The BB5 uses an eight-times oversampling, 18-bit digital filter coupled to a Burr-Brown PCM67 D/A 'chip', a hybrid circuit claimed to combine the dynamics and 'drive' of multi-bit converters with the lowlevel linearity of one-bit systems. The Black Box 5 costs £44990. The combination of 1073 and BB5 is £l,09980. Owners of the Black Box 3 can upgrade to the equivalent of BBS by exchanging the plug-in D/A board and rear panel, a modification which can be carried out by an Arcam dealer or by the factory at £250.
