Chadwick Boseman talks Black Panther

Variety has a series of Actors on Actors videos up for awards season, including a clip of Logan Lerman (Fury) chatting with Chadwick Boseman about his new role as Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The segment includes a hint that he might be introduced in more than one movie before the solo film in 2017.

“There’s a director on the movies that I’m introduced, but not for ‘Black Panther,’” said Boseman. “Just being a part of that discussion is huge. You’re reading the comic books and you have ideas about how that’s gonna happen and you can discuss that.”

“Movies” being the operative word here. Although it was previously stated that T’Challa would make his debut in May 6, 2016′s Captain America: Civil War, the appearance of Andy Serkis playing what many believe to be Ulysses Klaw in the trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron, as well as the rumors of Vibranium playing a key role in that sequel’s plot, have many wondering if Boseman will indeed drop by in next summer’s blockbuster. It would certainly make more sense than having the ruler of Wakanda pop up in Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 or Thor: Ragnarok. His only other appearance in the MCU was a very subtle reference to Black Panther on a monitor at the end of Iron Man 2.

“I’m excited about it too!” continued Boseman. “Beyond excited, it’s like to the point where you feel numb and then your mind goes off into, ‘Ok, how do I achieve that?’ The great thing about it is that the actual character is unique in a lot of ways. I can’t think of another character that’s like the leader of a nation and is a superhero at the same time. There are a lot of different ways this story can go, ways that they can do it, so I’m really just excited about how it fits into the bigger picture of what Marvel is doing.”

Kevin Feige talks Black Panther’s role in Captain America: Civil War. First poster for the movie released

While Black Panther’s world of Wakanda as well as his enemy Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) were introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Birth.Movies.Death. talked to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige about how T’Challa himself, as played by Chadwick Boseman, will emerge onscreen in next year’s Captain America: Civil War.

“It is a role that he is still in the beginning phases of taking on, it’s a mantle he is only beginning to take on because his father is older,” says Feige of the transfer of the traditional Black Panther role from T’Challa’s father T’Chaka. “The reason we introduced him in ‘Civil War’ is because we needed a third party. We needed fresh eyes who wasn’t embedded with the Avengers and who has a very different point of view than either Tony or Steve. We said, ‘We need somebody like Black Panther… why don’t we just use Black Panther?’ That’s how it went in the development process.”

Although technologically far advanced, Wakandans have up until this point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe kept to themselves, and they have also kept their most prized resource vibranium out of reach until a certain homicidal cyborg named Ultron took things into his own hands. Turns out, the Earth-shattering events in Sokovia during the Age of Ultron finale will play a pivotal role in Black Panther taking his place on the world stage.

Feige adds: “Today, pre-‘Civil War,’ post-‘Ultron’ I think he and his father are saying, ‘A bunch of vibranium just got out of here and wreaked a lot of havoc. Maybe we can’t stay behind these borders anymore, maybe we have to stick our heads out and make at least an attempt to be a part of the rest of the world right now, while at the same time protecting our people.’ That’s sort of where we meet him in ‘Civil War.'”

Creed director Ryan Coogler confirmed for Black Panther!

First rumored last month, Creed director Ryan Coogler has now officially taken the director’s chair on Marvel Studios‘ upcoming “Phase Three” entry, Black Panther. Coogler made his feature film debut with the acclaimed Fruitvale Station, which was also headlined by Creed star Michael B. Jordan.

“We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family,” says Kevin Feige of the Creed director. “The talents Ryan showcased in his first two films easily made him our top choice to direct ‘Black Panther.’ Many fans have waited a long time to see Black Panther in his own film, and with Ryan we know we’ve found the perfect director to bring T’Challa’s story to life.”

Ryan Coogler’s Creed is in theaters now. A spinoff of the Rocky franchise, the film just earned star Sylvester Stallone a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture.
