Blu-ray Players Connect to iPhone with BD Touch
NetBlender has announced that they have developed software that connects BD-Live Blu-ray players (such as the Sony PlayStation 3) to Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch.
The software, which has been named "BD Touch", makes use of the network connections of both devices, and allows them to share data.
Examples of how this technology could possible be implemented are:
:106: Pushing digital copies of movies to an iPhone from the Blu-ray disc menu.
:106: Automatically cataloguing a viewer's Blu-ray disc collection and providing movie suggestions
:106: Displaying trivia and extra information about a movie in sync with the movie's playback
:106: Turning existing Blu-ray discs into games that use the iPhone as the game controller
John Harrington, NetBlender CEO commented, "Having spent the past decade building interactive video products we are thrilled to bring together two of the most interactive consumer products ever created with BD Touch.
We began R&D on integrating the two devices right after I experienced the iPhone Multi-Touch interface for the first time."
NetBlender has released a SDK for BD Touch, which includes the complete specification for sending and receiving data between a BD Touch compatible Blu-Ray disc and an iPhone or iPod Touch. This was done to hope spur creativity among developers, and encourage use of the connection software.
