Captain America screenwriters talk tone of third film, Falcon as Cap

Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are some of the golden boys over at Marvel Studios. Having penned Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and the pilot for the upcoming "Agent Carter" TV series, they show no signs of stopping as they'll also be writing Captain America 3. Speaking with SFX, the pair were asked about the tone of the upcoming film or if we should expect something as different as "The Winter Soldier" was from "The First Avenger."

"That’s the challenge!" Markus replied. "But we are working on something that I think is an amalgalm."

"When we hit upon the Brubaker run of the comic book, we all said that, with certain exceptions, that’s the tone of Cap's modern franchise," McFeely added. "And you can imagine that with us back, with the Russos back, then if you like Winter Soldier you’ll hopefully like the third one, if we do it right!"

Another story that recently created a lot of buzz online was when Marvel Comics announced that Sam Wilson, AKA The Falcon, would be taking on the mantle of Captain America in a brand new comic series, which has left many people wondering if we might see the same thing in the films.

"We tend to stay on the sidelines when it comes to the comics," McFeely said. "We wait and see what we'll steal from in three or four years from now!"

"I think the movies can accommodate almost anything, if there's a need," Markus said "I think there is a much greater need to shake things up in the comics because that’s a narrative that’s been going on for 60 or 70 years, so you're going to wind up having to do things to it. Ours has only been off the ground for five or so. So it's not quite time to start changing things up yet."

Jeremy Renner says Hawkeye could appear in Captain America 3, Russos comment

If there's one "Avengers" character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that hasn't gotten his fair share in the spotlight just yet, it's Hawkeye. Though he was introduced in 2011's Thor, was mostly mind-controlled in 2012's The Avengers, and will appear in next year's Avengers: Age of Ultron, Barton hasn't had the same exposure as some of the other characters. That could change in 2016, however, as actor Jeremy Renner says he might show up in the upcoming Captain America 3.

Speaking with Collider, Renner was asked about this upcoming schedule and revealed he might have to free up some time next year for the third "Cap" film.

"There are rumblings of Captain America 3. I don't know what's going to happen there. I've got to find the time, man (laughs). I'm trying to stay home and I can't."

Following this initial story, SuperHeroHype spoke with returning directors Anthony and Joe Russo this afternoon about the potential for Hawkeye's includion, and whether it was something they could talk about.

"Unfortunately we can't (comment)," Anthony said, "It's too specific to what the movie may be."

Joe did chime in and teased, "There are certainly characters that Cap is close to or has a strong relationship with that would make sense appearing in his films. I think that's all we can say about it."

Robert Downey Jr. joins Captain America 3!

Breaking:
Marking a major twist to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's "Phase Three," Variety is reporting that Robert Downey Jr. is close to joining the cast of Captain America 3 as Tony Stark and that the film will launch elements of the hit comic book crossover event, "Civil War" in the MCU!

The news comes on the heels of an announcement from Marvel this morning that a new "Civil War" comic book is on the way next summer.

Just last week, Downey hinted that something big was on the way, although it was briefly believed that he was referring to a fourth Iron Man film. Now, it seems quite likely that Marvel Studios has even bigger plans for Iron Man!

Captain America writers tease Civil War, Black Panther and Peggy Carter’s involvement

Though Marvel is already set to rock the world of the MCU with Avengers: Age of Ultron this year, next year’s Captain America: Civil War will see Steve Rogers and Tony Stark go toe-to-toe, which we already saw glimpses of in the first “Avengers.” Speaking at TCA (via IGN) for “Marvel’s Agent Carter,” screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who have written all three “Captain America” films, were asked about “Civil War” and provided some interesting teases, including how long the idea for adapting the series into a film has been an option.

“It’s been on and off the table for a while, let’s put it that way,” McFeely said. “And it’s a challenge to do it and make sure that all the characters that we’ve established, and everyone’s established in the MCU are serviced and sound correct, right? Because there’s a difference between the characters in Civil War, which was written in 2006, 2007. The MCU doesn’t exist [when it was written]. There isn’t a Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans who has helped create the character so we need to make sure that that template gets adjusted and what have you in order to make sure it services these characters and not just sort of rip off their parts and make them look like them.’

This being their third “Captain America” script and the second film for Anthony and Joe Russo at the helm, why did Marvel choose to bring them back?

“I think part of the reason for bringing back us and bringing back the [Russo] brothers is because Marvel is very pleased with Winter Soldier aesthetically. I think it’s a really adult movie. It’s very well made and that’s partly the texture of the movie. You can argue it’s the most realistic of the Marvel movies, whatever that is to you. I think it’s fair to say that a Russo brothers movie will stay in that vein.”

The pair were asked about how Peggy Carter might play into “Civil War,” given her relationship with Steve Rogers and Tony’s father Howard Stark.

“As we have not started shooting, and I’m on my fourth draft of many, that question [of who Peggy was to Tony Stark] has been in and out all over the place so who knows,” McFeely replied. “So many things can shake out but we’ve had conversations and we pitched scenes. Some stay and some don’t. But we saw [Peggy] in Winter Soldier, so we know she’s around”.

Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther also came up, as he will be introduced in Captain America: Civil War before jumping to his own solo feature film.

“I’ll keep that one close to the vest,” said McFeely, “but I’m very gratified that they went with Chadwick and that he said yes because he’s a good get.”

Russos confirm Scarlett Johansson will return for Captain America: Civil War

Following the teases earlier today from screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, directors Anthony and Joe Russo have arrived with additional quotes about Captain America: Civil War. Speaking at a press event in Beijing with Sina.com (via CBM), the pair revealed that Scarlett Johansson will in fact return as Black Widow for Captain America: Civil War.

“We’ve been preparing for the movie since the one debuted last year,” Anthony said. “So, we’ve been working on it for a long time now. We’re very happy how it’s coming along. Captain America 3 is gonna be called Captain America: Civil War and it’s going to star Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson will be back, Winter Soldier will be back, and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man will also be joining us in the next film.”

Johansson’s inclusion in the film adds yet another high profile member of the MCU to the cast that is also set to include Anthony Mackie as The Falcon, Chadwick Boseman in his MCU debut as Black Panther, Daniel Bruhl in a mystery role, Frank Grillo as Crossbones, and potentially Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye.

Jeremy Renner confirmed to appear in Captain America: Civil War

Back in September, Jeremy Renner teased that there were “whispers” that he might appear in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. Now, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that he will in fact reprise his role of Hawkeye in the sequel. Though the character wasn’t present for the original “Civil War” storyline in the source material, he was critical of Tony Stark’s position after the fact, so expect him to join the ranks of Steve Rogers and company.

The cast for Captain America: Civil War continues to grow, in what Anthony Mackie calls “Avengers 3.8.” In addition to Renner, “Civil War” will feature Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Mackie as The Falcon, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Chadwick Boseman in his MCU debut as Black Panther, Daniel Bruhl in a mystery role, Frank Grillo as Crossbones, and the brand-new Spider-Man.

Robert Downey Jr. talks Captain America: Civil War, Teases Spider-Man

As the press circuit for Avengers: Age of Ultron continues, Robert Downey Jr. appeared on “The Late Show with David Letterman” last night where inevitably the topic of his next Marvel film came up, next year’s Captain America: Civil War. With Letterman being clueless to the matter, Downey explained the concept of the film to Letterman and even teased the inclusion of Spider-Man.

“There was a strain of comics where Captain America and Iron Man, they went on different sides and they fought each other,” Downey says.

“Do you win? You must win,” Letterman replied.

Daniel Bruhl confirms he will play Helmut Zemo in Captain America: Civil War

Although Variety technically broke the news a few weeks ago, Daniel Brühl has officially confirmed to The Independent that he will appear as the villain Baron Zemo in Captain America: Civil War, but with one little twist: He will be playing Baron Helmut Zemo,

“I think I can tell you that without being thrown into Marvel prison,” Brühl said. “For the first few days I’ll walk around like a little boy, just amazed by the megalomania of it. It’s such a huge project. We could do 20 films with the budget.”

The original Baron Heinrich Zemo first appeared in 1964’s “The Avengers” issues #4 as a former Hydra scientist who fought Captain America during World War II and later formed the Masters of Evil to counter The Avengers. His son Helmut Zemo made his debut in 1973’s “Captain America” #168, and eventually became mutated after falling into a boiling vat of his father’s chemical Adhesive X. After that he aligned himself with Arnim Zola and Batroc, both of whom appeared in last year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Helmut Zemo later goes on to lead the hero team of reformed villains known as Thunderbolts.

Baron Zemo won’t be the only villain Cap has to contend with in the new film (which starts shooting today in Atlanta, Berlin and Puerto Rico), as Frank Grillo just Tweeted today about his previously-announced return to the fold as Crossbones.

Chris Evans calls Captain America: Civil War ‘set up’ for Avengers: Infinity War

Though Avengers: Age of Ultron is still taking the world by storm, the attention is already on next year’s Captain America: Civil War, which will draw a line in the sand and divide the Marvel cinematic universe. Speaking with MTV, Captain America himself, Chris Evans, opened up about the movie calling it a set-up for the “real battle” in 2018 and 2019’s Avengers: Infinity War - Part I and Avengers: Infinity War - Part II.

“It’s to jump off into the next Avengers, Infinity War,” Evans said. “So Cap 3 is going to be the set-up of the real battle, so there are a lot of people.”

In addition, Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson revealed that they know whose “side” they’ll be on for the conflict, but they wouldn’t divulge.

Feeling left out, Mark Ruffalo pointed out that he won’t be in the film which prompted Johansson to respond: “Well you never know, there’s always time…I’ll talk to the Russos about it.”

Martin Freeman joins Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War

Marvel Studios announced today that Martin Freeman has joined the cast of Captain America: Civil War! They did not reveal who he will be playing.

“From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in ‘The Office,’ Martin’s range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us,” said Captain America: Civil War producer Kevin Feige. “We couldn’t be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Celebrated for his roles in “Sherlock,” “Fargo,” the “Hobbit” trilogy, and much more, Freeman has earned one Primetime Emmy Award and one BAFTA Award, both for his portrayal of Doctor John Watson in “Sherlock.” Martin has also been nominated for a Golden Globe for his role of Lester Nygaard in “Fargo,” and nominated for a further two Emmy Awards and two BAFTA Awards. Most recently Martin has been seen hosting “SNL” and has filmed Tina Fey’s untitled wartime black comedy.

Emily VanCamp’s Agent 13 will return in Captain America: Civil War

Although it’s not entirely a surprise given the importance of the character of in the comics, Deadline has just confirmed that “Revenge” star Emily VanCamp will be reprising her Captain America: The Winter Soldier role as Agent 13 in next year’s Captain America: Civil War.

Posing as the Avenger’s neighbor, “Kate,” Agent 13 was tasked with keeping an eye on Steve Rogers for S.H.I.E.L.D. Although the character in the film is clearly based on the comics’ Sharon Carter (the niece of Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter), Agent 13’s actual name in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has not been wholly confirmed. It’s a safe bet that we’re going to know a whole lot more about her, however, this same time next year.
