Στο Γιοχάνεσμπουργκ του 2016 μια ειδική ομάδα ανδροειδών έχει αναλάβει τη διαφύλαξη της τάξης. Ο κατασκευαστής τους Ντίον Γουίλσον θέλει όμως να πάει ένα βήμα παρακάτω, δημιουργώντας ένα ρομπότ με ανεπτυγμένη τεχνητή νοημοσύνη. Για να επιτύχει το σκοπό του, θα κλέψει ένα ρομπότ από την εταιρία που δουλεύει για να τρέξει πάνω του το εξελιγμένο λογισμικό του. Η απαγωγή του Γουίλσον και του ανδροειδούς του από μια συμμορία γκάνγκστερ θα περιπλέξει, όμως, τα πράγματα...

In the near future, crime is patrolled by an oppressive mechanized police force. But now, the people are fighting back. When one police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming, he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself.
