Born: 6 February, 1903 Chillαn, Chile

Child prodigies often do not develop past their initial gifts. An exception was the great Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau. He made his debut at age five in Santiago and soon thereafter was sent to Berlin to study with Martin Krause (at Stern's Conservatory) a celebrated pupil himself of Franz Liszt.
Arrau enjoyed a career that spanned nine decades. He repaid the debt to his teacher by joining the faculty of the Stern Conservatory where he taught until 1940. His early international career found him collaborating with the likes of Nikisch, Furtwangler, Muck and Mengelberg. Every musical capitol hailed him, first as a virtuoso in his early years and later as an interpreter with few peers of the music of Beethoven and Schumann.
Claudio Arrau had two recording careers. From the beginning of his public career until the 1950s he recorded mostly for the predecessors of today's EMI. Beginning in the 1960s he recorded exclusively for Philips (for the remainder of his life) and left a monumental legacy of the Beethoven Sonatas and concertos, most of the important Schumann works, Liszt and Brahms and later on, returning to the loves of his youth Chopin and Debussy.
Arrau was an aristocratic player who used his phenomenal technique to get to the emotional heart of the music he loved.
