According to a new report from market analysts The Diffusion Group, most console owners do not use their games consoles for DVD playback. Only 13 per cent of those US owners surveyed said they used their games machines to watch films. Even worse, only 30 per cent of games owners knew their console had movie playback potential. Diffusion analysts said the figure demonstrated “how poorly many consumers understand the capabilities of today’s game consoles.” It concluded that this lack of awareness is a “major barrier to persuading consumers to start using these platforms for non-gaming media consumption.”
Current data suggests that owners of the PlayStation 3 buy considerably fewer movies than owners of dedicated HD DVD playback hardware.
