"I do have 1 story about DSP modes if it might help.
Years ago I had a co-worker who was 'into' music. He put himself through college playing in bands or setting up studios/events for others. He had around 5 receivers and speakers in every room and on his back patio. I asked him what he thought about DSP modes as I was wondering if a receiver with these was better than one without. He basically said he thought they were a gimmick and that they were un-important.
The next Monday after this conversation, he came by to tell me he had changed his opinion. Over the weekend he had looked at his newest receiver and noticed that it was set to "Jazz2". He turned it off. The next day he fired up the system while puttering around the house. After a while he noticed the music sounded bad. Real bad. He went so far as to haul his speakers into the garage to test them because he was sure he had blown a driver. Then he rememberd the DSP setting. He hooked everything back up, put the mode back to "Jazz2" and suddenly the music sounded wonderful again.
He thought about it and rememberd that when he first got the new receiver he had played with the DSP settings and just left it on the setting that sounded best. A year later - he was shocked at how not using the DSP mode make his music sound bad. His best guess is that the acoustics in his living room were poor and the DSP mode seemed to compensate."
