A True Benchmark in Studio Monitoring.

The Dynaudio M range of speakers has been a staple in main monitoring in studios around the world for years. With the M5P – Evidence Dynaudio adds a monitor to the range that is specifically suited for mastering.

The M5P has been designed without compromises using only the best materials and is custom built in the Dynaudio factory in Denmark. The M5P is also the first studio monitor to feature Dynaudio Directivity Control, a technology that utilises a symmetrical drive unit array and an elaborate crossover topology to control sound radiation, which makes it easier to integrate into any studio room.

Bob posted a few words about his first impression of Evidence M5P on Facebook:

“Dynaudios blew my mind. Most impressive and accurate transient response I've heard from any speaker in my entire career. The low diffraction, perfect polar response and first order crossover break new ground. More later after I dial them in.”

After a few days in Studio A, Bob has had the opportunity to listen more closely to his new Evidence M5Ps and he posted this observation:

This is incredible. For the first time in decades of professional listening I finally can distinctly and clearly and obviously hear absolute polarity differences. I guess I had to wait till I had a completely phase-coherent system like these new Dynaudios.

[DOUBLEPOST=1483687989][/DOUBLEPOST]With the right design and cabinet configuration, a multi-driver loudspeaker can approach the coherent sonics of a single point source and deliver a more linear polar pattern than planar loudspeakers like Quad and Magneplanar. The Revels needed considerable excess phase correction, which resulted in an impressive transient response and impact. But out of the box the Dynaudios are already phase-coherent so I did not need apply any phase correction for the main loudspeaker and just a bit of it to improve the performance of the JL subwoofers. With or without correction, the Dynaudios have the most impressive and accurate transient response I’ve heard from any speaker in my entire career! Here is a graph comparing the corrected step responses of the two loudspeakers.

12B Step Response, after excess phase correction. Green: Revels & JL woofers. Red: Dynaudios & JL woofers.
In both traces we can see a distinct single positive-going impulse followed by the recovery back to 0 volts. Even though the Dynaudio contains four woofers, two midranges and two tweeters! A remarkable achievement. It took a lot of correction to get there with the Revels and to my ears the sound is not as coherent or tight as the Dyns.

I’ve also improved my power amplifiers, using a pair of ATSAH 500s, by AcousticImagery, which use the Hypex NCore 500 modules, and can deliver instantaneous peaks up to about 1200 watts short term and continuous power of 700 watts into four ohms.

This Dynaudio loudspeaker is the most transparent loudspeaker that I’ve ever heard, probably beating or at least equaling Quad Electrostatics, Magneplanars and Apogee ribbons. But the Dynaudio’s transients and microdynamics exceed that of the other phase-coherent speakers: Snare drums have the impact of real life, orchestral dynamics are stunning.

Dynaudio Directivity Control (DDC)
Dynaudio Directivity Control builds on a vertical, symmetrical drive unit array and an elaborate crossover topology, which gives you a very controlled sound radiation.

With two tweeters, two mid-range drivers and four woofers per speaker, each drive unit complements its counterpart with regard to frequency response and phase relationship in such a way that an immensely accurate and defined sound radiation characteristic is achieved. In fact, the energy radiated to your room’s floor and ceiling is reduced by approximately 75%, making the M5P far less dependent on the room and much less critical in positioning compared to other studio monitors.

Another always-critical factor is the low frequencies. To implement DDC in this frequency area, we positioned the woofer cabinets directly above and below the midrange and high frequency driver middle section. This gives you two acoustical advantages: First, it provides a more equally spread radiation of the lower frequencies into the room. And second, the four-woofer-design combines the diaphragm surface of a larger, conventional single-woofer design with the power, speed and control of four smaller single voice coil-magnet-assemblies. The result? These two immediate benefits simply add up to a very even sound distribution that reveals every sonic detail there is to discover in your source material.

To sum up, this means that a transition to an M5P monitor system is a smooth process. We all know that rooms are different and that changing main monitors is a major change in any mastering suite, but considering the significantly reduced impact from the floor and ceiling, the integration becomes much easier than usual, and you should be back in the mastering business in no time.

Και από το white paper του 2002

https://www.ketos.eu/fs/ceef15d4-4b...-dynaudio-general-info-eng-ddc-technology.pdf

Based on these findings, the ‘Dynaudio Directivity Control’ - or DDC - was developed to make speakers less dependent from room acoustics. DDC restricts the vertical sound radiation by reducing the energy transmitted to ceiling and floor by 75%. This is realized with special physical and acoustical characteristics of the drivers, a special geometric driver arrangement on the front panel, and a new crossover filter technique.

DDC can be explained by having a close look on the Dynaudio Evidence drivers sound radiation, starting with the higher frequencies. Above 10 kHz, frequencies are more focused in their radiation from the tweeter dome. The lower the frequency, the more the radiation angle expands and the focus opens. At approximately 8 kHz the tweeter dome starts to have an expanded radiation, with increasing energy to

the sides and decreasing energy directly towards the listener. Room reflexions would become more and more audible. At this point, a second tweeter adds to the first one, allowing to emit more energy directly. The radiation angle is not more expanded than before, therefore in relation the direct sound towards the listener is still more dominant than the radiated sound stimulating room reflexions.

Further down the frequency range, at around 3 kHz, even the surface of two dome tweeters is to small to emit more directly than radial. At this point the two mid-drivers are blended in, keeping the radiation angle unchanged. Down to the bass, the first two bass drivers blend in, supported by the outer two bass drivers from 300 Hz on. Even at these lower frequencies, the vertically symmetric driver arrangement has a very good impact on the room acoustic.

This description is simplified, but explains the principles behind DDC. Implementing this technology in the Evidence and Confidence models is physically and acoustically much more complex.

The result is a loudspeaker with an unparalleled ability to reproduce any music as it was originally recorded, independent from the individual listening room. The extraordinary sound quality of the Evidence and Confidence loudspeakers is not reserved for sound optimised studios– it can be enjoyed in any individual personal listening room.
