EUROPEAN GREEN TV

Panasonic TX-28PN1

With Europe’s projected energy dependency level set to reach 70% by 2030 (according to the European Commission’s ‘Green Paper on Energy’), more attention must be paid to where and how we consume electricity. Panasonic’s TX-28PN1 analogue TV shows how more efficient consumer electronics equipment could help make a saving. This set is built on an eco-designed chassis with reduced wiring and a small transformer lead. It aims to reduce energy consumption both when operating and in standby mode – plus it boasts a high level of recyclability. It’s a clear win for Panasonic in the first EISA Green TV Award.

EUROPEAN PLASMA-TV

Pioneer PDP-506XDE

For the second consecutive year Pioneer has proved itself the best of the best in Plasma TV. The Pioneer PDP-506XDE combines myriad innovations to set a new standard for plasma picture quality. Its sixth generation ‘Pure Black Panel’ panel increases luminance efficiency, and decreases unwanted light output, yielding increased sharpness and contrast while reducing overall energy consumption. New Pure Drive 2HD circuitry generates deeper blacks without sacrificing detail, and a PAL-specific multistep 3D Y/C filter drastically improves analogue tuner-performance. Plus, for those who require the very best picture-quality, there are built in password-protected ISF Certified Calibration Configuration tools, providing additional day and night settings to meet internationally approved broadcast requirements.

Samsung LE40M61B

Samsung’s new LE40M61B is the quintessential flat-screen TV. It looks sleek in its ultra-slim, ‘high gloss’ black frame. Its 16:9 panel renders razor-sharp pictures with a resolution of 1366x768 pixels. And thanks to Samsung’s patented special Super-PVA display technology, this set provides an extraordinarily wide viewing angle, transcending a traditional limitation of this genre. S-PVA, which employs two individually driven sub-cells per pixel, also benefits response time and ensures this set’s contrast is among the highest of any currently available TV. Factor in HDMI and Component inputs and it’s clear this TV is unequivocally ‘HD-Ready’

EUROPEAN PROJECTION-TV

Thomson Scenium 50DSZ644

For those who like big TV pictures but small expenditure, projection TV is the only way to go. The only drawback is that sometimes big pictures mean a big set too. However, with the Scenium 50DSZ644, Thomson has solved this problem elegantly: in all respects other than depth (only 17cm), this set is a huge performer. Its generous 50-inch screen delivers sharp, clear pictures from an advanced, DLP-based optical engine with 1280x720 pixel resolution.

Philips ‘Clear LCD’

Consumers are growing to love the slim profile and crisp pictures of the latest LCD TVs, even though LCD panels have traditionallly suffered motion artefacts and a ‘lack of black’. Now Philips has tackled both issues head-on with its new ‘Clear LCD’ technology. Step one is to stimulate the lazy LCD crystals with ‘Overdrive Control, which decreases their response-time to six milliseconds. Next, a ‘Scanning Backlight’ algorithm limits the effect of motion blurring by only illuminating pixels when they have reached their desired transmission level. Then, by actively allocating dark scenes less light than bright ones, ‘Clear LCD’ generates deeper blacks. These in turn yield increased detail and much greater perceived contrast, all without any loss to brightness thanks to the use of HCFL (hot cathode fluorescent) illumination.
