Cambridge Audio has spared no costs in its development of the Azur 840A. Within its case there is an army of audiophile-grade components reinforcing a power amplification section offering ‘Class XD’ operation - a genuinely novel approach that combines Class A warmth and lack of distortion with the low temperature operation of Class B. This makes for a highly sophisticated, efficient and attractive-sounding amplifier, backed by a high current capability and an amazingly fast transient response. With 2x120 Watt RMS (8 Ohms) on tap there is power aplenty, yet its rich sound brings music to life with renewed charm. Manufacturing high quality audio products for more than seventy years is an achievement in itself; even more remarkable is the level of dedication to its electrostatic loudspeakers that Quad has maintained. The Quad ESL-2905 is their present flagship loudspeaker, representing the ultimate expression of the remarkable technological innovations introduced fifty years ago by Quad’s founder, Peter Walker. Its build-quality and design are uncompromising, including a substantial power supply and aluminium front panel. Its D/A conversion and output stages employ 24bit/192kHz converters, a very efficient Legato Link PRO processor, and carefully selected electronic components. The PD-D6-J is also compatible with MP3 as well as WMA compressed audio formats. Its sound is dynamic, providing excellent high frequency definition without any hint of aggressive character.

Near the 600 Euro price level, B&W’s 685 is hard to beat. Its 16cm Kevlar mid-woofer features a profiled cast basket, and thanks to B&W’s latest aluminium tweeter with a small neodymium magnet, the two drive units can be located much closer together, achieving a wider vertical angle of coherent response. A foam ring and bung enable users to fine-tune the front-facing reflex port for optimal tonal balance and low-frequency control in locations close to a wall and out in the room. This design is powerful, efficient and well-balanced, and looks as good as it sounds with a choice of four contemporary enclosure finishes.
COMPACT SYSTEM:
LG FA/FB 162
This little system exemplifies LG’s aim to deliver innovatively styled products that are also easy to use. Just like the company’s ingenious ‘chocolate’ mobile phone, the 162’s high-gloss black centre unit features a touch-sensitive backlit panel with an ‘iPodeque’ user interface. Matching slimline speakers generate amazingly rich sound, thanks to additional side-mounted woofers in each enclosure, which eliminate the need for a separate dedicated sub. And the LG FA/FB162 is not only a visual feast. The system also features a multi-format CD (FA version) or DVD (FB version) player, a JPEG/MP3/WMA compatible USB 2.0 high-speed port, a sensitive FM/AM RDS tuner, plus a broad selection of sound improvement technologies - and all at an extremely affordable price.

Yamaha’s Soavo-1 is a conventional three way floor-standing speaker, but one distinguished by an extremely elegant and stylish look created by the famous Japanese designer, Toshiyuki Kita. The two-chamber cabinet, which includes no parallel surfaces, is fashioned from high quality materials, including a selection of real-wood finishes. The reflex port is carved, and there’s an aluminium support for the tweeter. The two 6.5-inch woofers and the midrange drive-unit are all fabricated from Yamaha’s exclusive Advanced-PMD diaphragms.
