BMW's 3.0-litre straight-six, twin-turbo petrol engine has been judged the International Engine of the Year by a panel of 65 motoring journalists from 32 countries - for the second time.
Scoring 380 points, it was almost 100 points ahead of the second-placed unit in the 2008 shortlist of finalists.
This engine, which is used in the 1-Series, 3-Series and X6 ranges, also won the 2.5-3.0-litre category. BMW scored three other category wins: the M5/M6's 5.0-litre V10 (overall winner in both 2005 and 2006) headed the 'Above 4-litre' class, the Mini Cooper S's 1.6-litre turbo (co-developed with Peugeot-Citroen) won the '1.4-1.8' class, and the twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel (123d) 'Best Newcomer', narrowly ahead of the M3's 4.0 V8.
Other engines shortlisted for the overall award were the Volkswagen Group's 1.4 TSI (second-placed with 287 points), the Volkswagen 2.0 FSI 207bhp (270 points), BMW's 4.0 V8 (241), the BMW-PSA 1.6 turbo (151) and the BMW 5.0 V10 (149), making it a pretty comprehensive domination by the German car-makers.
