http://www.avrev.com/news/0805/22.moog.htmlRobert Moog passed away on Sunday at the age of 71 in Asheville, North Carolina. He had been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in April 2005 and was fighting the disease with chemotherapy and radiation treatment. An engineer, Moog created his first synthesizer in 1964. Trough his seemingly simple, analog processor people were able to "synthesize" sounds not easily attainted in the studio. The results for years weren't too similar to the actual instruments but definitely took on a life of their own.
Moog synthesizers were widely used in the 1970s helping shape the sound of progressive rock. The synthesizers are incredibly popular to this day. In the late 1990’s a group of dedicated Moog lovers, the Moog Cookbook, crafted the awkward yet loveable Moog sounds into a seemingly irresistible collection of the best classic rock songs ranging from "Born to Be Wild" and "Ain't Talkin’ About Love" to “Hotel California” and “Sweet Home Alabama”. More recently concert promoters also started an annual Moogfest featuring Moog-inspired artists in New York.
Moog had sold his company in 1973 but had just recently started a new business, Moog Music in 2002, selling products like the minimoog and moogerfoogers to artists like Nine Inch Nails, Beck and Sonic Youth. A public memorial is planned for Wednesday August 24, 2005.
