Marantz's SA1700 is our test winner purely based on exceptional all-round performance, although its ability to play SACDs is also a benefit. But even with standard CDs the warm delivery characterised by superb timing and cohesion is less compromised than its rivals.
Creek's EVO affords the same sense of rhythmical timing that separates the best players but it lacks a little dynamic drive. Both Rotel's RCD-06 and Audiolab's 8000CDE can't claim the same toe-tapping musicality but they excel in other areas - the Audiolab is expressively detailed while the Rotel offers the best defined low frequencies.
