According to the European HD DVD Promotion Group, standalone HD DVD has a 74 per cent share of the dedicated high-def player market. The pan-European research conducted by by GfK reveals a three-to-one advantage for the format. The figures exclude PlayStation 3 Blu-ray sales.
Said Eddie Cunningham, Chairman of the European HD DVD Promotional Group: “European consumers recognise that HD DVD delivers the most engaging titles and experiences as well as outstanding video and sound quality. Benefits such as picture in picture for video commentaries, in-movie bonuses and now, access to extra web-based content are all unique to HD DVD. Also, unlike other HD formats, every player ever produced gives the consumer the same consistent HD performance and experience. These are compelling reasons why increasing numbers of European movie watchers are embracing high definition through HD DVD .”
According to Steve Nickerson, Senior Vice President, High Definition Media at Warner, “The standalone player market is by far the biggest driver of movie sales in the long-term. This is simply because those who buy a standalone player are interested solely in buying and watching movies and other video content, whereas those with HD drives built into games consoles are primarily interested in games.”
The group says that there are currently 130 HD DVD available in Europe, and this is expected to grow to 300 by the end of the year. 1,000 titles will be available worldwide by the end of 2007.
