It may have recently dropped out of the media centre PC market, but Hewlett-Packard still has faith in a networked entertainment future. In the US, the leading PC vendor has revealed a new line up of LCD TV screens which will have built-in network connectivity.

Speaking at the Society for Information Display 2007 International Symposium, HP Vice President and General Manager Jim Sanduski called the line HDTV 2.0. By building network functionality into flatscreens, Sanduski believes HP can counter the price erosion, which is now dogging the industry, and make it a player in the flatscreen market.

As well as streaming content from networking PCs, the sets will also be able to go online and download or stream content directly. According to iSuppli, screens with integrated networking will rise from a relatively insignificant 1.6 million units shipped in 2006 to 21.3 million by 2009. 4.3 million networkable TVs are expected to be sold in 2007.
