"They may be bitter rivals, but mounting pressure from Japanese and Taiwanese brands has caused Korea’s leading TV makers to announce a strategic alliance to defend their LCD and plasma businesses.

Samsung Electronics, LG.Philips, LG Electronics and Samsung SDI have created the Korea Display Industry Association (KDIA) with the principal aim to staying ahead of Japanese brands like Matsushita (Panasonic) and Sharp. The group says that it will co-operate on joint research and development of core display technologies, share patents and significantly begin to buy each others panels, rather than source from non-Korean operators.
The KDIA will be helmed by the chief of Samsung’s LCD business division, Lee Sang-wan."
