Japan's Audio-Technica is known mostly for their pro recording equipment and high-end headphones, but the company has also produced some head scratching oddities in their past, the "Mister Disc" being a prime example.
Originally released in 1983, the Mister Disc was a portable turntable which was capable of running on either batteries or AC power, and could be connected either directly to the included headphones or to a stereo through line-out jacks. Unfortunately, "portability" was basically limited to picking it up and putting it down somewhere else, as the unit would only work on a flat and stable surface. Battery life was rated at 12 hours on three “C” batteries; rather impressive considering the first portable CD players would chew through four "AAs" in less than 3 hours.
