'Home cinema for people who don't want home cinema'. That's how Denon's product marketing consultant Roger Batchelor described the brand's new D-X100BD Blu-ray receiver when it made its launch yesterday.
This 2.1-channel one-box solution, which will retail for £900 with a pair of stereo speakers, or for £800 without, certainly looks like it's designed to be more at home in a second room, and is rated at 2 x 65W amplification. Saying that, the Denon spokesman was keen to stress that it makes use of a separate block construction. 'It's a serious piece of mini componentry,' HCC was told.
The D-X100BD features an FM tuner (but not DAB, as it's a global product), Dolby Virtual Speaker technology and an input for Denon's range of docking stations. The Ethernet port is for BD-Live only – the YouTube support offered by Denon's new standalone Blu-ray spinners is absent.
Neither is the new unit 3D-ready, something that's also true of the brand's reference-level A1UD Blu-ray player. Might that award-winning component be in line for an upgrade to the new format?
'We're waiting to hear if there's a hardware upgrade for 3D for the A1UD,' said Batchelor. 'It'll have to be hardware, not software.'
