Pacific Rim 2 set for April 7, 2017!

Previously teased earlier this month when director Guillermo del Toro revealed that he was writing a script for the film with Zak Penn, Legendary Pictures and Universal Studios have revealed that Pacific Rim 2 will debut in 3D and IMAX 3D theaters on April 7, 2017.

"The characters I love will return," del Toro told BuzzFeed in a statement. "Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast."

In addition, del Toro and Legendary debuted a video in which he announced not only the forthcoming sequel but an animated series and a continuation of the Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero prequel graphic novel. Check back for more details on the film and expansion of the "Pacific Rim" franchise as we learn them.

Guillermo del Toro on Pacific Rim 2, the Animated Series and Graphic Novel

Last Thursday, we got the big announced that Pacific Rim 2 will hit theaters on April 7, 2017 and that we're also getting an animated series and a continuation of the Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero prequel graphic novel. Now, director Guillermo del Toro has talked a bit more to the The Wall Street Journal about all three.

He says he will start designing Pacific Rim 2 with a core team in August, a process that can take anywhere from six to nine months.

He says that "it was hard to create a world that did not come from a comic book, that had its own mythology, so we had to sacrifice many aspects to be able to cram everything in the first movie. Namely, for example 'the Drift,' which was an interesting concept. [Then there was] this portal that ripped a hole into the fabric of our universe, what were the tools they were using? And we came up with a really, really interesting idea. I don't want to spoil it, but I think at the end of the second movie, people will find out that the two movies stand on their own. They're very different from each other, although hopefully bringing the same joyful giant spectacle. But the tenor of the two movies will be quite different."

It's interesting that he mentions both "The Drift" and the portal. Where do you think they could take those in the sequel?

As far as the animated series, Del Toro says they "are talking about all the possibilities in terms of networks. We’re formulating ideas that are, again, interesting and not the usual route, but the series tackles the stories that happened to pilots working in the Shatterdome, but also cadets learning how to become pilots. All of this happens prior to the first movie, and it gives you a little more depth into the background of certain characters that will appear in the second movie."

He also mentions that he was really happy with "Tales from Year Zero" and they are continuing the tales for the next three years. "So by the time the second movie comes out, you will have probably one year of the animation airing, and you will have three years of the comic book series ongoing, so we are trying for all these things to be canon, to be in the same universe, to not wing anything, so that if anyone... a lot of kids, for example, have discovered 'Pacific Rim' through the toys. They come in through the toys, and then they watch the movie, and then they learn this, they learn that through the movie or the comic book series, so we're trying to make it canon so we can expand the universe. And by the time we come into the second movie, you have a good feel for the world, and we can dedicate ourselves to character and ideas and spectacle."

Guillermo del Toro updates on Pacific Rim 2

Always a man in the middle of several projects, Guillermo del Toro today chatted with ShockTillYouDrop.com about his new FX series, "The Strain," also offering updates on a few of his upcoming big screen projects including Pacific Rim 2.

"You’'re asking the right questions, but not necessarily the way you think," says del Toro when asked if the Pacific Rim sequel might showcase the parallel universe from which the monstrous Kaiju originate. "If you think are we invading their world, we’re not, but we’re showing more of that world."

Guillermo del Toro says Pacific Rim 2 will lead to a third movie

By the end of Pacific Rim, our heroes Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) had successfully sealed the breach and saved humanity FOREVER… or perhaps not. Doing his damnedest to open a new portal to that alien world is director Guillermo del Toro, who is hard at work with screenwriter Zak Penn on crafting Pacific Rim 2, and he's given Collider an update on the sequel and the sequel after that. That's right, there will be a third one.

"The direction we're going in is very different from the first," del Toro divulges. "All I can say is some of your favorite characters come back, some others don't because we have decided that we're going to shoot ambitiously and say 'Let's hope we have three movies,’'so some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one. I hope people like it but you're gonna get a very different experience from the first one."

Given that we never got a Hellboy 3, it's very optimistic of del Toro to save characters for a rainy day. Who will be left out of the fun? Will Hunnam be replaced by a new leading man only to show up in the final minutes to save the day? What about Charlie Day's dorky scientist Newt being revealed as the master villain, as Day himself has suggested? Or it could be Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost, who told Mako rather Obi-Wan-like, "You can always find me in the drift!"

Currently working on a second season of FX's "The Strain," putting the finishing touches on 2015's Crimson Peak and working on that mysterious esoteric black & white film of his, del Toro has still managed to crack the script for Pacific Rim 2 with a very specific timetable.

"We got the first draft of the movie now, and we are going to spend another 4-5 months on the screenplay before we start pre-production," del Toro confirmed. "We start pre-production next year in August-September and start shooting November-December next year."

John Boyega gets in a Jaeger for Pacific Rim 2!

Legendary Pictures has tapped John Boyega as the lead role for the second installment of its Pacific Rim franchise. The film, which is targeting a 4th Quarter start date is rapidly taking shape as a key project on Legendary’s upcoming slate with Boyega playing the son of Idris Elba’s character from the original film.

“It is undeniable that with all his talent and natural charm, John stands out amongst today’s generation of young leading men,” said Mary Parent, Legendary’s Vice Chairman of Worldwide Production.

“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The ‘Pacific Rim’ universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job,” stated del Toro.
