Panasonic is expanding its Blu-ray authoring operation in Hollywood to meet growing demand.

Its PHL facility recently completed work on the highly-regarded Pirates of the Caribbean discs and has authored 12 BD Java titles to date. It predicts that this year Blu-ray titles will begin to rival the technical prowess of HD DVD. According to Eisuke Tsuyuzaki, VP of corporate development, the first true picture-in-picture BD title will appear this year. He also says the first BD Live enabled movie disc will appear in 2008. No current dedicated Blu-ray player is equipped to deliver BD Live functionality.

Apparently, there is as yet no consensus as to where online content for BD Live software should be stored. The industry needs to agree on a content staging area, he says. The very first BD Live discs will allow users only moderate interactivity, such as downloading of additional soundtracks, trailers and subtitles. In due course Tsuyuzaki says e-commerce applications will become available. Once enough owners have access to BD Live, he envisages online chats with directors and other creative movie people, becoming major attractions.
