Godzilla's Gareth Edwards to direct the 2016 Star Wars spinoff film!

Godzilla
director Gareth Edwards is attached to direct one of the upcoming Star Wars spinoff films, which will feature a screenplay by Gary Whitta and is now set to hit theaters December 16, 2016! The official announcement reads as follows:

In addition to the episodes of a new "Star Wars" trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. Gareth Edwards will direct the first stand-alone film, with a screenplay by Gary Whitta. The film is due out December 16, 2016.

Gareth Edwards blazed into the filmmaking forefront with his acclaimed work on "Monsters," a film he wrote, directed and served on as cinematographer and visual effects artist. The skill and vision readily apparent in "Monsters" earned him the high-profile spot directing this year's smash hit "Godzilla".

"Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm, said Edwards.

Gary Whitta's screenwriting credits include 2010s "The Book of Eli" starring Denzel Washington. He is also well known as a journalist and editor in the video game industry, as well as part of the BAFTA award-winning team on Telltale Games adaptation of "The Walking Dead".

Whitta states, "From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, "Star Wars" has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth,is literally a dream come true. I'm still pinching myself."

Actresses being tested for first Star Wars standalone movie

While J.J. Abrams is putting the finishing touches on Star Wars: The Force Awakens for its release on December 18, things are already moving forward on the first Star Wars standalone film with The Hollywood Reporter‘s Heat Vision reporting that actresses are being tested for the female lead in the Gareth (Godzilla) Edwards-directed film.

Canadian actress Tatiana Maslany (right), who has made huge waves playing multiple clones in BBC America’s hit series “Orphan Black,” and Rooney Mara (center), nominated for an Oscar for her performance in David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, are two of the names being mentioned with The Theory of Everything‘s Oscar-nominated star Felicity Jones also on the short list.

THR’s Borys Kit says that Jones may have scheduling issues as she’s already pegged to co-star in the The Da Vinci Code[/b] sequel Inferno opposite Tom Hanks and directed by Ron Howard.

There still has been no word on who the focal character of the first of the planned stand-alone “Star Wars” movies will be, although Disney and Lucasfilm have already snagged the release date of December 16, 2016. They’re currently looking for a writer to step-in following the departure of Gary Whitta after turning in his draft.

A second stand-alone movie being co-written by Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan will be helmed by Chronicle helmer Josh Trank, who is currently finishing up his relaunch of The Fantastic Four for 20th Century Fox.

Chris Weitz boards Gareth Edwards’ standalone Star Wars film

Following the departure of formerly-attached screenwriter Gary Whitta earlier this month, Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm have, according to a story today at The Hollywood Reporter, set Academy Award nominee Chris Weitz to work on the screenplay for the first standalone Star Wars film.

Weitz launched his screenwriting career with the 1998 animated comedy Antz. He’s best known, however, for his Oscar-nominated work adapting Nick Hornby’s About a Boy in 2002, a film that he also directed. Other directorial credits include The Golden Compass in 2007 and The Twilight Saga: New Moon in 2009. As a screenwriter, Weitz’s work can next be seen in Walt Disney Pictures’ live-action take on Cinderella, directed by Kenneth Branagh and slated for a March 13 release.

First Star Wars spin-off officially titled Rogue One, Star Wars: Episode VIII coming May 26, 2017!

Straight from The Walt Disney Company Annual Meeting of Shareholders, Bob Iger has delivered a bombshell of an announcement revealing that the first upcoming “Star Wars” standalone film, set to be written by Chris Weitz and directed by Gareth Edwards, is officially titled Rogue One and will star Academy Award nominee Felicity Jones. It will begin shooting this summer in London and debut in theaters on December 16, 2016. You can watch the first Rogue One logo below.

The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (“Band of Brothers,” “The Pacific”) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce.

In addition, Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII and that it will open in theaters May 26, 2017 – forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman will produce the film.

This will reteam Desplat with director Gareth Edwards, for whom he composed the music for last year’s blockbuster Godzilla.

Besides his regular work with Wes Anderson, the prolific Desplat is also known for such blockbusters as both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 and Part 2, as well as three pictures for Weitz as director (The Golden Compass, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, A Better Life). In addition to winning for The Grand Budapest Hotel, he also received an Oscar nomination for The Imitation Game.

Mads Mikkelsen reveals his Rogue One role

We’re less than eight months away from the big screen release of Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and, par for the course when it comes to news from a galaxy far, far away, a lot of specific details about the film are still shrouded in mystery. That shroud does get slightly pulled back today, however. Star Mads Mikkelsen was a guest on Sky News this morning and he revealed his character’s connection to Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso.

“Felicity plays a young, strong woman,” says Mads Mikkelsen, “And I play her father.”

Search your feelings. You know this to be true. You can also check out the original video in the player at the bottom of this page.

Rogue One character details revealed!

Following the cover reveal this morning, EW is back with more details on the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story characters. You can check out portraits of each new Rogue One character and read all about them below.

First up is Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso, about whom Lucasfilm president and Rogue One producer Kathleen Kennedy says: “She’s got a checkered past. She has been detained [by the Rebellion] and is being given an opportunity to be useful. And by being useful, it may commute her sentence.”

Next is Diego Luna’s Captain Cassian Andor, who is described as a “by-the-book Rebel intelligence officer” who is “committed, steady, and practical, and has seen more than his share of combat.” “He conveys a fair amount of experience and the reality of what it’s like to do this every day, to try to figure out how to resist the Empire effectively and intelligently,” Kiri Hart, Lucasfilm’s chief of story development said of the character. “It’s not easy.”

Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Imwe, pronounced chi-RUT, is perhaps the most interesting new addition as it’s been revealed he’s not actually a jedi but a man “devoted to their ways” who has used his spiritual beliefs to overcome his own physical handicap of blindness. “Chirrut falls into the category of being a warrior monk,” says Kennedy. “He very much still believes in everything the Jedi were about.”

Next we have Jiang Wen’s Baze Malbus, who is described as “heavily armored” and a loyal friend of Chirrut.

Riz Ahmed’s Bodhi Rook is the lead pilot of the group, described as “hot-headed” by Lucasfilm.

Alan Tudyk’s motion capture character K-2SO is described as “the antithesis of C-3PO” by Gareth Edwards. “Kaytoo is a little bit like Chewbacca’s personality in a droid’s body,” Edwards says. “He doesn’t give a s— about what you think. He doesn’t fully check himself before he says things and does things. He just speaks the truth.”

Mads Mikkelsen’s Galen Erso, the estranged father of Jyn, is described as the Star Wars version of the father of nuclear weapons, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and the kind of scientist that both the Rebellion and Empire are eager to use to their advantage. “He’s one of those people that has insight into you know specific aspects of just how the universe works,” says Hart. The picture of Mikkelsen below isn’t his actual costume in the film, which Lucasfilm isn’t yet ready to reveal.

Ben Mendelsohn’s Director Orson Krennic is the primarily villain of the film, who we now know is the leader of the Deathtroopers previously seen in the teaser trailer. The outlet reveals that he’s hoping to squash the Rebels with his soldiers to gain favor with the Emperor, all while “avoiding the wrath” of Darth Vader. “The bad guy is a lot more terrifying when he’s really smart, and really effective,” says executive producer John Knoll. “There is a lot of palace intrigue going on in the Empire, with people conspiring to move up the ranks and sabotaging each other. There’s not a lot of loyalty there.”

Finally, we have Forest Whitaker’s character, whose name has not yet been revealed but is said to be someone Star Wars fans will “recognize immediately” when his name is known, despite that he looks quite different from how he has previously been seen in Star Wars canon.

Forest Whitaker is playing Saw Gerrera in Rogue One!

Following the cover reveal and list of character descriptions this morning, EW has one more Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ace up its sleeve. They have revealed that Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland, The Butler) is playing Saw Gerrera in the new film. Fans will best remember Gerrera from “The Clone Wars” series (voiced by Andrew Kishino), where he fought alongside a pre-Darth Anakin Skywalker on the planet Onderon. You can check out a new portrait of Saw Gerrera below!

“Consider him kind of a battered veteran who leads a band of Rebel extremists,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy stated. “He’s on the fringe of the Rebel Alliance. Even [they] are a little concerned about him.”

While Saw may be an ally to the Rebel squad in Rogue One, he’s not really one of them, as his partisans have been accused of terrorist tactics.

“He’s off on his own,” adds Kennedy.
