Compile of posts on HF regarding Manhattan Project.

Mike:
"Funny you should ask -- I am taking a long look as we speak of alternative filter algorithms for "The Manhattan Project". This is a completely new and unprecedented audio component. We already have a running prototype of "The Gadget" (absolutely hair-raising) but have yet much software to try. It can be frustrating, as this device has NO precedents for audio. But then again, neither did the first pre-Theta stuff 30+ years ago."

Jason:
"I think Mike will approve of me disambiguating The Gadget a bit, if for no other reason than to salve any consternation about "hey, wait a minute, I just bought a Yggy/Gumby/Bimby, are you guys working on something else?"

1. It is not a DAC.
2. It is not an ADC.
3. It is not a superultramegaWyrd.
4. It is not a DSD combobulator.
5. It is not a disk spinner.
6. It is not a server.

It is, however, a digital product. Beyond that, I can't say."

Jason:
"And it is not another USB-SPDIF converter, nor another class D amp, nor another room correction system, nor another digital preamp.

We're calling this development The Manhattan Project. As in, never been done before. Components like The Gadget simply have never existed. It is not another anything. As Mike said, this is an undertaking of a magnitude similar to creating the first standalone audio DAC."

Jason:
"I also see this as being fundamentally different than saying:

1. "We're going to be doing this Ragnarok thing with these kind of specs, and here's a rendering," then ending up being 2 years late.

2. "Check out the sexy photos of this new Lyr, we plan on shipping them a the end of the month," then ending up being a couple of months late.

Some things you can expect from us:

1. We'll always be developing something new. Always. As in, always. However, many of these experiments won't go to market.

2. Most of the time, it will be a fairly recognizable product. In The Gadget's case, it is not a product that can be likened to other things.

So, when Mike mentioned it, I felt the need to disambiguate (look it up) and reassure everyone that this wasn't gonna be some crazy DAC at 3x the Yggdrasil's price, or a better DAC than Yggdrasil at 1/8 the price, or anything like that. The DAC line is solid. The digital filter is not in flux. Everything is as it should be in DAC-land. Cool?"

"There is one other product that I am working on which is a new and completely different product category. It is not a D/A nor A/D converter, amplifier, DAP, nor anything resembling any product ever built in support of audio. The seeds for it were inadvertently planted when I played in a bluegrass group 50 years ago and wondered why expensive, old instruments sounded far better than newer ones. We call it “The Manhattan Project” and I have a prototype “Gadget” running which is absolutely hair raising. It operates only in the digital domain."
