Bob Orci talks Sinister Six spin-off

Sony surprised us all last month when they announced their intention to expand the world of Spider-Man on the big screen to include two spin-off films that include Venom and The Sinister Six. Coming from the collective brain trust of Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon and Drew Goddard, the team will build on the cinematic foundation laid by the first two films in the series in the interest of a continuous tone and thread throughout the films.

Little has been said about the films themselves since the announcement, but now in an interview with IGN, Roberto Orci says they're hard at work on establishing the kind of tone they want for the spin-offs.

When asked about their approach to the The Sinister Six, whether the title characters would be straight-up bad guys or more anti-heroes, Orci replied:

"That's the discussion we're having right now; how exactly do you do that, and how do you do it without betraying the audience and making them all mean? Drew Goddard [The Cabin in the Woods] is going to be writing that one, so it's kind of his problem. [Laughs] I'm kidding. We're all working on each other's stuff. So we want to be true to it, but there are some antiheroes in this day and age. There's been examples of that even on TV -- Vic Mackey on The Shield, one of the great antiheroes of all time. There are ways to milk that story. Audiences have seen everything. They've seen all the good guys who never do anything wrong. Is there a story in seeing the other side? That's the challenge, and that's the fun. I'm not sure how we're going to do that yet."

The Sinister Six plots a story of redemption

In the wake of confirmation earlier this week that Drew Goddard will be both writing and directing Columbia Pictures' The Amazing Spider-Man spinoff, The Sinister Six, IGN had a chance to sit down with Spider-producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, who dropped a few details about the supervillain team-up.

"[E]verybody's looking for redemption," says Arad. "They're unforgiven... As long as there's that one thing in common: they'll hate Spider-Man. They'll hate him because he's so different from them. But then, you know when you sit by yourself somewhere and you think about it, they all had a different life at one time and that's what's so beautiful about the Spider-Man universe."

"There's no such thing as just a villain," adds Tolmach. "There are villains by virtue of choices that people make but they always begin as humans, as characters. As flawed people; as tragic people. You know great movies have been made about a bunch of bad guys who get together to do something.”

Whether or not a certain wall-crawler will be making an appearance, however, remains to be seen.

"We're definitely not going to say what we're doing in terms of Spider-Man there," says Tolmach.

Sinister Six still in development, Spider-Man to debut in Captain America: Civil War

Last night, Marvel Studios broke the internet once again by revealing they would co-produce a new Spider-Man movie in 2017 after introducing the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe via one of their own films. Now, The Wall Street Journal reports that Spidey’s debut feature in the MCU will be none other than Captain America: Civil War, set for release on May 6, 2016.

“Civil War” is also set to introduce Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther into the realm of the MCU in what is described as “a big part” of the film. It seems unlikely that this would change, but alterations are possible now that the web slinger has returned home.

In other Spider-Man news, WSJ also reports that Sony’s Sinister Six feature film remains in development but has been pushed back from its November 2016 release date as the studio “rethinks” their plans for it. The Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard is attached to write and direct the film.

The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield will not reprise his role of Peter Parker in the upcoming film, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 28, 2017.
