Sony is back playing its familiar “yes we will, no we won’t” game over the future of the PlayStation 3. When Warwick Light, the sales and marketing manager for Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand, was quoted in his local press as saying that a digital TV tuner was planned to turn the PS3 into a digital recorder, he seemed to be confirming rumours that have been circulating about a PS3 PVR since before E3. The (probable) USB device would be allied to a firmware update which would allow PS3 owners to time-shift TV programmes, and could be introduced sometime after New Zealand begins its digital terrestrial TV service in ‘08.
However, both Sony Europe and Sony US have been quick to denounce the comment, saying that the brand has no such announcement to make. Behind close doors, Light has probably already had a slapped wrist. A digital tuner for the PS3 looks a given. But does anyone really care?
