Sony has slashed the price of its BDP-S300 Blu-ray player before it’s even launched in the States. The model will now sell for 499 dollars.
Despite the surprise 100 bucks price cut, the model is Sony’s best-specified BD player to date, and features 1080p/24fps output, HDMI v1.3, DVD and CD playback plus AVCHD compatibility. It also supports CEC control via HDMI, dubbed BRAVIA Theatre Sync.
Sony US marketing VP Chris Fawcett explained the cut by saying: “The BD format gained great momentum in the past several months, and we’e going to capitalise on that with the new model.”
In reality, the Corporation is now embroiled in a tit for tat price war with rival Toshiba and its HD DVD system. In an effort to accelerate the take up of their respective HD formats, both makers seem prepared to drive prices down faster than pundits originally thought possible.
Unsurprisingly, Sony UK has made no new announcements about the availability or price of its debut BD player.
