"In an effort to reach slipped sales targets, Sony says it will accelerate production of the PlayStation 3. It now aims to send 11 million into stores worldwide this year.
By increasing volume production Sony will be able to reduce costs, making that inevitable price-drop less painful to its bottom line.
As widely expected, the company failed to hit its six million console target for the last fiscal year. The PS3 has some way to go before it can catch the still hard-to-find Wii. Nintendo’s games system already claims 58 per cent of the Japanese market, compared to Sony’s 20 per cent for the PS3.
NPD sales figures for April show a worse than expected performance for the PS3, with US sales slipping to 82,000 units. In the same month, 360,000 Wii’s were sold. Microsoft shifted 174,000 Xbox 360s.
Sony says it will publish 105 games for the console before March 2008. A lack of compelling software for the system is seen as a contributory factor to its relatively poor performance."
