CalMAN Version 4 Gets Even Better

The new version 4 of CalMAN Professional Monitor Calibration Software, officially released by SpectraCal in July 2010, has been a big hit with video monitor calibration professionals and enthusiasts. CalMAN version 4 simplifies calibration, calibrates displays faster, and provides innovative calibration features never previously available. CalMAN v4 is really easy to use, with an Introduction tutorial, guided step-by-step calibration workflows, and simple to use, easy to customize graphs for Brightness, Contrast, Gamma, CIE, Color Temperature, Gamut Luminance, RGB Balance, and Delta E.
CalMAN version 4.0.0 provided greatly improved capabilities over the already very successful CalMAN version 3. These updated version 4.0.0 features included:
CalMAN Version 4.0.0 Updated Capabilities

• New user interface, optimized for calibration in a dark environment.
• Completely redesigned around workflows to allow you to have as many workflows as you want, to be customized for your exact calibration tasks, and to easily share workflows with other users.
• Simplified software startup, with default hardware and software configurations. Each time you start up, CalMAN remembers which meter you were using, which Workflow you wanted, etc.
• Software screens precisely scale to all size displays, from oversized monitors to netbook screens.
• Redesigned Meter Profiling in version 4.0 is now so fast and easy that SpectraCal recommends profiling tristimulus colorimeters each time they are used, to insure the highest accuracy on any display.
• All charts, tools, text boxes, action buttons, etc. now have selectable Properties to control the object’s function and appearance.
• Innovative new Interactive Charts directly communicate with several video processors and displays to allow “closed loop” calibrations. With version 4.0, you could now adjust the level of Blue relative to Red and Green, for example, by simply dragging the Blue bar on an RGB Balance chart. Or, you could adjust the x,y definition of a color by dragging its measurement dot on a CIE chart.
• The completely new multi-threaded I/O engine in CalMAN v4 is many times faster than CalMAN v3. Measurement series often complete in less than 25% of the previous times. With the new I/O engine design, you can perform any number of device operations simultaneously. For example, you can easily perform simultaneous readings from multiple meters, while also using other objects on the screen.

We didn’t rest on our laurels with the release of version 4.0, however. SpectraCal continues to respond to customer needs and develop innovative features to make display device calibration ever easier and faster. Updated software versions are released every 60-90 days. Since the official release of version 4.0.0 in July, there have been a number of CalMAN program updates available for download, with the latest, version 4.1.1, now available at www.spectracal.com.
New CalMAN Features Since v4.0.0
A number of exciting new features have been added to CalMAN since version 4.0. Most of these are a direct response to customer requests. We’re always listening for new calibration ideas and would love to discuss your ideas for making your calibrations faster or more convenient. Just email us or give us a call. Following are new CalMAN features added since v4.0:
Direct Display Control (DDC) - Provides all of your display or video processor’s picture controls right on the CalMAN page where you would use them. Setting brightness? The brightness control is right on the page. Sharpness? Likewise. On pages where Version 4.0 featured Interactive Charts that allowed CalMAN to adjust calibration values for you, CalMAN 4.1 adds Direct Display Controls to allow you to follow up with your own tweaks.

Auto Calibration Action - You can now place a button on your workflow that automatically adjusts grayscale at all levels or color gamut for all colors with a single button click (although it will take a significant adjustment time).
Rename History Tabs - CalMAN Data Histories, displayed as tabs across the top of the page, can now be renamed to help you identify the conditions of each different measurement.

Video Test Patterns in Layouts - Video test patterns can now be displayed in a CalMAN calibration step, for cases where the computer running CalMAN is also driving the display device to be calibrated.
Database Converter Utility – A conversion utility is now included in the CalMAN installer to update your previous CalMAN v3 database to the new CalMAN v4 format.
Levels Editor Utility – This utility allows you to create custom grayscale measurement series. Want an 11-point grayscale with the first two points left off? The Levels Editor allows you to build it (available in the SpectraCal Program group at the Windows Start button).
ISF_China Workflows – CalMAN version 4.1.1 now supports custom ISF_China_Advanced and ISF_China_Expert workflows for our Asian counterparts.
Device Control Enhancements
An important aspect of CalMAN’s usefulness is its ability to control all the meters, test pattern sources, and calibration or display devices that you might wish to use for video display calibration. In the software releases since version 4.0, there have been many additions and improvements made to CalMAN’s meter, source, and calibration device control features. Following are those enhancements:
New Meter Support
Orb SP100 - Support was added for the Orb SP100 spectroradiometer.
JETI Meters - Support was added for the JETI Specbos 1201 and 1211 spectroradiometers.
UDT-9400 - Support was added for the Gamma Scientific UDT-9400 non-contact tristimulus colorimeter.
CalMAN X2 - Support was added for the CalMAN X2 colorimeter (an enhanced version of the X-Rite EyeOne Display2).
Photo Research PR-701 - Using a Photo Research 701 no longer requires manually installing a DLL.
HP DreamColor (Display2 OEM) - Support was added for the HP DreamColor’s built-in color meter.
X-Rite SIP-based meters - Support was added in 4.1, and updated in 4.1.1, to use multiple SIP-based colorimeters simultaneously (X-Rite Chroma series, Display series, and DTP-94).
New Generator/Source Support
Quantum Data 701A - Support was added for the QD 701A HD-SDI/DVI/HDMI generator.
CalMAN DPG-1400 -Support was added for the new CalMAN DPG-1400 Digital Pattern Generator.
AV Foundry VideoForge - Support was added to display specialty patterns with the Video Forge.
Sockets-Based Pattern Sources - When setting up pattern sources that communicate with the PC via IP (e.g. AV Foundry Video Forge), CalMAN now provides a default IP address for the source and remembers any changes you make.
Marshall MEI - Support was added for the test pattern source incorporated in Marshall displays.
DVDO Duo - Support was added for the test pattern source incorporated in the DVDO Duo.
Lumagen Radiance - Support was updated for the test pattern source incorporated in Radiance processors.
Processor Support Update
FPS ImageAnyplace 200 - Support was added and improved for interactive calibration with Flexible Picture Systems ImageAnyplace 200 processor.
AV Foundry VideoEq Pro - Support was updated to enable correct PC/Video level control of the VideoEQ Pro.
DVDO Duo - Support was added for interactive calibration with DVDO Duo.
DVDO video processors - Support was added interactive calibration with DVDO Duo, Edge, and VP series video processors via the CalMAN Infrared Controller.
Panasonic Displays - Support was added for Direct Display Control interface with Panasonic display devices.
Boland Monitors - Support was added and improved for Direct Display Control interface with Boland monitors.
Marshall MEI - Support was added for interactive calibration with Marshall displays.
Runco DHD - Support was updated for interactive calibration with Runco DHD4 controllers.
Issues Resolved Since v4.0.0
As with most new product versions, CalMAN version 4.0 had a few issues that were able to sneak by our extensive QA testing, which is preceded by a round of customer beta testing for every product release cycle. SpectraCal makes an effort to respond quickly to customer reports of software problems and works to correct them as quickly as possible. Following are the issues that were resolved since the release of version 4.0:

• Restoring saved files on non-English versions of Windows XP - Unicode characters in file paths could cause difficulty restoring saved data and workflows on some non-English versions of Windows XP (Delete your Settings.XML file (My Documents\SpectraCal\CalMANv4) before or after installing 4.1.1 to resolve this issue).
• Non-Alphabetic Characters in User Names – Updated version 4.1.1 to correctly handle non-alphabetic characters in user login names.
• Data Fields Improvements - Fixed data fields to resolve problem on cursor move and to resolve save/restore issue. Resolved problem with adding user data fields to custom workflows. All reported issues with data fields have now been resolved. Also, added new data sources and added target_Y and target_y data fields.
• Grayscale measured when Gamut requested - Under some conditions, the Gamut calibration page would execute a Grayscale measurement series. It now always correctly performs a Gamut measurement series.
• Lumagen Radiance – Resolved the issue in connecting to the Radiance in CalMAN that would reset the Radiance to 11 data points, even if the Radiance had previously been set to 21 data points.
• Previously connected displays are now properly removed.
