In an interview with the Star Wars-themed podcast, Forcecast, Skywalker Sound engineers Matt Wood and David Acord have revealed they are working on yet another audio remix of the blockbuster trilogy, immediately causing Jedi-fans to wonder whether the movies are being prepped for a Blu-ray release, or a theatrical 3D presentation.
Whilst talking about the roar that accompanies Obi Wan's screen entrance, the duo said, 'that sound effect has been changed again. At some point the audiences will be hearing that scene again with the new sound effect.'
Might this be for an imminent 3D release? It could well be – Star Wars seems destined to be re-issued on the next-gen format, ever since dimensionalisation wizard In-Three used its 2D to 3D conversion on the opening scenes of A New Hope in 2005, with Lucas in attendance at the screening. The director even admitted at the ShowWest film expo in that year that he wanted to shoot Episode III: Revenge of the Sith in 3D but was hampered by logistical problems.
In January of this year, Lucas fuelled fan frenzy even more when he told Access Hollywood: 'We've been looking for years and years and years of trying to take Star Wars and put it in 3D. But, the technology hasn't been there. We've been struggling with it, but I think this [the success of Avatar] will be a new impetus to make that happen'.
Of course, this new mix could simply be for a forthcoming 2D Blu-ray release. In April 2010, Steve Sansweet, Lucasfilm's Director of Content Management and Head of Fan Relations, revealed at the C2E2 comic convention that work was underway on a Blu-ray boxset, loaded with extra features: 'We have been at work for a couple of years working on a very full set of all six movies on Blu-ray with lots of extra material.' A 2011 release date for the BD set seems likely.
At HCC, we'd sell our own grandmothers to get the original trilogy on Blu-ray. But a 2D-3D conversion? Who wants that?
