And the winner is...

Final verdict

For the most part this group test represents very good news, as no less than six of the TVs we've tested would all make excellent main or second-room TVs, depending on your needs. It seems that every time we do an LCD group test these days we're struck by how far picture quality has improved while prices have plummeted - and that's a trend we're only too happy to see continue.

While most brands seem to be heading in the right direction though, we can definitely distinguish a specific pecking order among our eight super test contenders. And sadly for Sharp this pecking order finds the LC32RD2E down at the bottom. This may seem a touch harsh for a TV that shows genuine talent in most picture departments, but its 100Hz processing is just too distracting to tolerate - especially when you're talking about the most expensive TV we've featured.

In 7th spot we find Toshiba's 32C3030. Now we understand Toshiba's urge to produce a true budget model, but with so much competition around at what is ultimately the same sort of price point, compromises on viewing angle and black levels go a little too far for comfort.

From here things get tougher to call. But by a nose we've put JVC's LT-32DA8BJ in 6th, on account of its black level shortcomings and slightly cluttered design.

The LG 32LB1DB found in 5th place certainly can't be accused of lacking anything in the style department, however. And as an HD monitor it's actually a great performer, too. But its standards drop more noticeably than we'd like when it comes to showing the standard definition sources that are likely to be its lifeblood at this end of the TV market.

In 4th we've put Sony's KDL-32S2530. This is big improvement over Sony's debut Bravia LCDs, yet it still suffers just enough problems with those LCD issues of colour tone and motion smearing to keep it out of the medals.

Just sneaking onto the podium then, is Samsung's LE32R87BD. In fact, as an all-round package, with price, performance, looks and features all considered together, it's arguably the most astutely thought-through TV in this whole group test.

But for our top two we've allowed ourselves to be seduced by simple picture quality. And picking between the Panasonic and Philips models for top spot really is very difficult. Both have things in their favour, but after much debate we've ultimately decided to pick the Philips on account of its slightly more convincing black levels and the colourful delight known as Ambilight…
