Tannoy has unveiled its latest home cinema speaker system - and a very stylish affair it is too. Called the Arena system, it's a sub/satellite affair comprising four satellite speakers, a dedicated centre speaker and an active subwoofer.

The satellites employ a new Tannoy innovation that brings together the company's WideBand system into a brand new miniature 5in version of Tannoy's famous point source Dual Concentric drive unit. A dual concentric drive is integrally moulded into the baffle of the organically styled satellite speakers - and the Arena speakers add to this by using a built-in Tannoy Super Tweeter.

To cater for the specific audio requirements of the front sound stage within a home theatre system, the dedicated centre channel loudspeaker is equipped with a supplementary bass driver to augment power handling. The ridig acoustic shell of the satellite and centre channel speakers, robustly constructed in cast aluminium, provides full acoustic optimisation of the drive units. The centre channel and satellite speakers are magnetically shielded to eliminate colour fringing effects when placed close to a television.

The Arena satellite and centre speakers can be fixed to a variety of mounting options, including swivelling table stands and wall mounts, and a floor-standing option.

The subwoofer is a 300W affair that employs patented BASH technology - a high efficiency power amplifier circuit topology that Tannoy claims has taken the 'best of Class D and Class AB and created a new class of its own'. Depending on the available space or the desired visual effect, the subwoofer provides various orientation options to optimise acoustic coupling to the listening room. The 250mm (10in) drive can thus be positioned facing downwards, sideways or forwards.

The subwoofer is also equipped with stereo line level inputs, which can either utilise or bypass the system's internal crossover circuitry. An external control allows the low frequency extension to be adjusted manually from around 60Hz down to the unit's lowest operating frequency. This useful feature ensures the optimum settings for music or home cinema listening; adjustment to match the relative level of the main speakers, or just setting to suit your own taste.

The final thing you need to know about the Arena speakers is that they're available in a choice of high-gloss finishes: bronze, silver, white or black
