When is a price cut not a price cut? When it’s a fire sale, that’s when.

Still smarting from reaction to the lack of a cold cash price cut on the European PlayStation 3, SCEE president David Reeves maintains that the US price cut isn’t really a price cut, just a method of clearing out the US inventory of 60GB PlayStation 3s:”All they’re doing is taking their stock in trade that they’ve got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July.”
When the stock is shifted, he adds, the product will be deleted from the Sony catalogue, leaving the higher capacity 80GB edition back on sale at the original 600 dollar price point, with a free game.

The issue going forward though is not whether Sony can afford to cut the real cost of the PS3, rather whether it can afford not too. As prices of HD disc players tumble, the console could soon lose its appeal as one of the cheapest Blu-ray players around, and Microsoft looks certain to apply more pressure at retail. With games developers already beginning to refocus their attention toward development for Nintendo’s vastly more popular Wii, time looks like one luxury Sony’s luxury console can no longer afford.
