Putumayo presents Calypso, a collection of classic Caribbean songs and Calypso-influenced popular music from the golden age of island music. In the 1950s, calypso and other Caribbean folk music experienced a global surge in popularity after Harry Belafonte's 1956 album Calypso became one of the best-selling records of all-time. Artists from Barbados, Trinidad, the Bahamas, Jamaica and other Caribbean islands began recording lively, upbeat music aimed at this newfound audience. The spirited rhythms, engaging melodies, and wry, double-entendre lyrics of Caribbean music made their way onto the record players of millions of American homes. The fad was a fleeting one, however, and much of the great music of this era remains unreleased on CD.
